Maundy Thursday 2024: Know its History and Significance

Maundy Thursday, which falls on March 28th, 2024 this year, is a significant day in the Christian calendar. It marks the Thursday before Easter Sunday and holds immense importance for Christians as it commemorates the Last Supper. 

According to Christianity.com, “Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, believed to be the day when Jesus celebrated his final Passover with His disciples. Most notably, that Passover meal was when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other.”

Over time, specific traditions developed around Maundy Thursday. The word "Maundy" is derived from the Latin word "mandatum," meaning "commandment." This reflects Jesus' words during the Last Supper, "I give you a new commandment," which referred to his call for love and service to others. 

Christianity.com mentions: “Christ's "mandate" is commemorated on Maundy Thursday---"maundy" being a shortened form of mandatum (Latin), which means "command."  It was on the Thursday of Christ's final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said this commandment to His disciples.”

“Jesus and his disciples had just shared what was known as the Last Supper and he was washing their feet when he stated: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another," it adds.

One tradition is the foot washing ceremony, which reenacts Jesus' act of washing his disciples' feet as a demonstration of humility and service. This ceremony is practiced by the Roman Catholic Church and some other Christian denominations. Stripping of Altars: In some churches, there's a custom of stripping the altars bare on Maundy Thursday, symbolising the desolation after Jesus' arrest. Special Meal:  Another tradition involves sharing a special meal to remember the Last Supper. Maundy Money: A unique tradition in the United Kingdom is the distribution of Maundy Money by the British monarch.
