How was that then, Lando?

What a moment for McLaren and for today’s race winner, Lando Norris. Here’s his immediate reaction from ahead of the podium:

???? “It feels incredible, not for myself but the whole team. They have done an amazing job this year to come from where we were at the beginning. I’m so proud of everyone. It’s been a lovely journey.

“Me and Zak already said we’re gonna get absolutely hammered tonight, so I’m excited. We’re going to celebrate this historic moment for the team. It’s going to be a good night.”

Leclerc: ‘We tried everything’

Charles Leclerc’s race was exceptional. But in the end, Ferrari came up short. Here’s his reaction from the podium:

???? “I knew I had to be very aggressive. I knew that in Lap 1, I had to take all the risks possible in order to gain as many places as possible to then be in a good position for the rest of the race.

“Then unfortunately, we were just too far back to do anything better than what we’ve done today. We’ve done the maximum.

“It hurts when the season is so close until the end. But we tried everything.”

The 2024 grand prix winners

While Max Verstappen got back into the winning habit towards the end of this season, 2024 was still a year of real competition for F1.

We had seven different race winners this season, all of them winning at least twice.

You have to go back to 2012 (eight) for the last time there were so many individual victors. One more to go:

R1 — Bahrain: Max VERSTAPPEN / Red BullR2 — Saudi Arabia: Verstappen (2)R3 — Australia: Carlos SAINZ / FerrariR4 — Japan: Verstappen (3)R5 — China: Verstappen (4)R6 — Miami: Lando NORRIS / McLarenR7 — Emilia-Romagna: Verstappen (5)R8 — Monaco: Charles LECLERC / FerrariR9 — Canada: Verstappen (6)R10 — Spain: Verstappen (7)R11 — Austria: George RUSSELL / MercedesR12 — Britain: Lewis HAMILTON / MercedesR13 — Hungary: Oscar PIASTRI /McLarenR14 — Belgium: Hamilton (2)R15 — Netherlands: Norris (2)R16 — Italy: Leclerc (2)R17 — Azerbaijan: Piastri (2)R18 — Singapore: Norris (3)R19 — United States: Leclerc (3) R20 — Mexico: Sainz (2)R21 — Brazil: Verstappen (8)R22 — Las Vegas: Russell (2)R23 — Qatar: Verstappen (9)R24 — Abu Dhabi: Norris (4)

For context, Verstappen won 19 of the 22 grands prix in 2023.

Onto the podium celebrations, where Zak Brown is up with the drivers and very much enjoying himself.

Lewis Hamilton was due to be interviewed after the podium drivers by Nico Rosberg, but it looks like Hamilton did a runner to celebrate with his Mercedes team.

I mean, I do wonder what his reaction was to Rosberg being the interviewer — but maybe that’s just my mischievous mind.

Here’s the reaction from McLaren CEO Zak Brown, speaking to Sky Sports within seconds of the checkered flag and its constructors’ championship win:

???? “I love everyone in Woking! What an awesome team effort. All the men and women at McLaren. Amazing. That was stressful.”

A word for Leclerc

With all that going on, it almost gets missed that Charles Leclerc started from the back row and finished this race on the podium.

It isn’t quite enough to win the constructors’ championship for Maranello but it is still a brilliant drive from the Monegasque favorite, who will be up against Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari next season.

I’m already looking forward to that one in 2025.

Scenes at the end

Lando Norris is shaking hands on the pit wall, while Lewis Hamilton does doughnuts on the start-finish straight.

Hamilton also gets a spot (pre-planned) to celebrate his Mercedes goodbye, behind the podium finishers.

Which has become quite neat, given Hamilton finished P4.

Hamilton then spends a lot of time sitting beside his Mercedes car, thinking about all that history.

Tears for Lando Norris too it seems, as he takes off his helmet.

Hamilton nips in after super drive

What a last lap from Lewis Hamilton too, who manages to pinch fourth off George Russell on his final race for Mercedes.

No replays of that overtake as yet — but I really cannot imagine Russell made him work that hard for it. It was certainly late.

But what a brilliant drive from Hamilton, on a truly emotional occasion for him and the team.

NORRIS WINS McLAREN THE CONSTRUCTORS’ TITLE!

There it is!

Lando Norris wins the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from pole, and that wins McLaren the 2024 F1 constructors’ championship.

Their first team title since 1998.

Superb!

A friendly message for Russell from Wolff

???? 57/58: Toto Wolff on the radio to Russell, telling him to keep it clean with Lewis Hamilton.

One to go…

McLaren nearly there, and so is Hamilton

???? 55/58: Three laps to go. As we were at the front, while Piastr finally gets passed Alex Albon and into the points for McLaren.

The fun is for P4, with Hamilton now within two seconds of his Mercedes teammate.

Will Mercedes have a word here? Surely not…

Norris a few laps from history for McLaren

???? 51/58: Norris is on the radio reporting that he’s struggling in dirty air from lapped cars, but he’s so close to the win that will secure McLaren the constructors’ title.

He’s got a five-second lead over Carlos Sainz still. Right now, it’ll be enough.

Right on cue from Piastri

???? 50/58: Make that P11 for Oscar Piastri, who overtakes Yuki Tsunoda with a superb move around the outside.

Brilliant to see, and it earns some applause back at base from McLaren’s watching staff.

Ferrari running out of options to disrupt McLaren

???? 48/58: I feel like I can hear the cogs whirring at Ferrari over what it could do to force something dramatic and reignite their constructors’ championship hopes.

Abu Dhabi GP - Figure 9

Lando Norris leads by almost six seconds from Carlos Sainz, with Charles Leclerc another 21 seconds behind.

Oscar Piastri is currently running P12 and could yet pinch a point.

As it stands, McLaren are getting this done — but ‘as it stands’ is still doing a bit of heavy lifting there.

Hamilton sets sights on Russell

???? 44/58: As expected, Lewis Hamilton skips past Pierre Gasly and is quickly on the radio asking what the next gap is.

He sounds a little disheartened to hear George Russell is 14 seconds down the road.

“You can do it,” adds team principal, Toto Wolff. There’s 14 laps to go.

Is McLaren considering a two-stop?

???? 42/58: Will Joseph has just been on the radio to ask Lando Norris whether he thinks he could pass Carlos Sainz with fresh tires, assuming Sainz stayed out. Norris thinks he could.

Abu Dhabi GP - Figure 10

Norris is four seconds clear right now. Would McLaren really want to give up track position, or is this just planning for all scenarios?

Fifth the limit for Hamilton hopes?

Getty Images

???? 41/58: Lewis Hamilton is making good progress on his medium tires, taking care of Nico Hulkenberg and closing in on the Alpine of Gasly.

But it does look like the top four, with George Russell closest, will be out of his reach unless something disrupts the order.

I’m thinking of a safety car — and stranger things have certainly happened.
