After being put into bat, Afghanistan got off to a decent start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran after a cautious start put on a solid 103 runs for the opening wicket. New Zealand were sloppy in the field as they dropped a couple of easy catches and missed out on multiple run-out chances in the first half of the innings.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz notched up his fifty, while Zadran fell for 44, with Matt Henry proving the Kiwis the much-needed breakthrough. Azmatullah Omarzai played scintillating cameo of 22 runs off 13 balls before falling to Henry. Gurbaz continued his merry ways and contributed 80 runs off 56 balls.
Afghanistan lost a few quick wickets in the death overs and were restricted to 159/6 in 20 overs. Trent Boult and Matt Henry bagged a couple of wickets for New Zealand, while Lockie Ferguson celebrated a solitary wicket.
