Luton Town have issued a “lengthy club ban” to a fan after Sunderland forward Amad Diallo appeared to be punched during his side’s Championship play-off semi-final defeat.

The club progressed to the play-off final after a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night.

However, footage emerged which appeared to show Diallo, who is on loan from Manchester United, being punched in the back by a home supporter while he went to reclaim the ball to take a throw-in.

A statement from the club read: “Luton Town is aware of an incident involving a home spectator and a Sunderland player during last night’s Championship play-off semi-final at Kenilworth Road.

“A lengthy club ban will be immediately issued and the incident is now also subject to a police investigation.

“Luton wishes to clarify that any such supporter behaviour is not acceptable in any way and will take swift, appropriate action to ensure that similar actions do not happen again.”

The Football Association are aware of the incident and are investigating.

Despite winning the first leg at Stadium of Light where Diallo was on the scoresheet, goals from Gabriel Osho and Tom Lockyer in the second-leg were enough to earn the victory and progression to the final for the home side.

Luton will face either Middlesbrough or Coventry City in the play-off final at Wembley on May 29 where the winner will achieve promotion to the Premier League.
