Argentina is not exactly sitting back but that urgency is not there to get another goal. It might be a tactic to reserve energy ahead of the final but can turn out to be risky.

The search for a first goal in Copa America 2024 continues for Lionel Messi.

40’ ARG 1-0 CAN

Argentina’s approach-play has been good but one drawback has been the Albiceleste rushing through their moves. In an attempt to pierce the Canada backline with their one-touch football, the final ball is often being rushed.

35’ ARG 1-0 CAN

The Canada defence was left exposed yet again as the Albiceleste attacked in numbers. Messi spreads the ball to an overlapping Tagliafico on the left and the latter goes for a shot from a tight angle. The shot is blocked and goes out for an Argentina corner.

Canada tries to get a quick equaliser and has a good chance from a free kick. Davies swings the ball inside the box but the Argentina backline gets it away to safety. Bombito slides in but fails to make contact with the ball. Alvarez keeps his composure to slot the ball inside the net. Crepeau has come off his line to narrow the angle but Alvarez nutmegs the Canada keeper to score the goal.

7’ ARG 0-0 CAN

There is a lot of sand and moisture underneath the pitch, which is slowing down the ball by a significant margin. Not the best football pitch you’ll see.

PREVIEW

Canada is preparing for a colossal Copa America semifinal showdown against Argentina on Tuesday at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in what its coach Jesse Marsch has likened to a David vs Goliath battle.

Argentina, the World Cup winner in 2022, is defending Copa champion and top the FIFA rankings, while Canada is ranked 48th in the world and is making its debut in the tournament.

“They’ve only lost twice in five years,” Marsch said of Argentina. “(Lionel) Messi is the best player to ever play the game. But we believe we have a chance and that’s the way we’re preparing.”

Despite losing 2-0 to Argentina in its opening match on June 20, in which Messi set up both goals for Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, Canada remains confident having advanced to the semifinals following a penalty shootout win against Venezuela.

“We know how good Argentina is because we played against them but we also had success in certain moments,” Marsch told reporters. “I said after the (Venezuela) match that we probably have to play a perfect match and maybe even then it may not be enough.”
