Ollie Watkins goal celebration: Police to contact Aston Villa and ...
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are to contact Aston Villa and Brentford to "find out further details" surrounding Ollie Watkins' goal celebration at the weekend.
Watkins scored an 85th-minute winner for Villa against his former club, as they came from behind to win 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The 27-year-old then stood in the back of the net pointing at a supporter in the home end who he said had verbally abused him.
A police spokesperson said: "We are aware of the claims.
"Officers will be making contact with officials at Aston Villa and Brentford to find out further details."
Watkins' celebration sparked angry scenes, with a scuffle between the two sets of players breaking out inside the goalmouth.
Villa were then reduced to ten men themselves deep into added time as Boubacar Kamara received his marching orders.
"There was one individual who had been giving me abuse all game, from the first corner," Watkins clarified.
"He'd been on to me all game saying personal stuff. I wasn't racially abused, but he was saying a lot of stuff. I thought 'I'm going to get him back'.
"It was aimed at him, not anyone else at the stadium, I have a lot of respect for the club, the people here, the owner, the manager. That's what I said to him after, when I was walking off."
Aston Villa expressed their backing for their striker in a statement released on Sunday evening, calling for "zero tolerance to abuse in football."
"Aston Villa FC wants to express its support for Ollie Watkins," they said
"With the utmost respect for the big majority of Brentford fans and for the club, we ask the authorities to investigate this incident to find this individual."
Bees boss Thomas Frank meanwhile stated that there was no ill-feeling from his part over the celebration.
"Ollie and I went to each other after the game," he said. "He said there was a situation with a fan. I know Ollie is a top person of top integrity."
