Atletico Madrid fire La Liga title warning with dominant Girona win
Atletico Madrid have secured their first La Liga win of the season via a dominant 3-0 victory over Girona.
Los Rojiblancos bounced back from a draw at Villarreal last weekend to record a key win in the Spanish capital.
Diego Simeone’s side finished fourth in La Liga last season, behind Girona in third place, but this was a power play over how they want this campaign to play out.
The hosts started positively at the Estadio Metropolitano as Antoine Griezmann curled home a superb free kick to break the deadlock.
The home side looked to push on after restart as Marcos Llorente cannoned home a brilliant second to score for the second game in a row.

Despite Girona threatening to trigger a fightback late on, Atletico Madrid saw off the contest in the closing stages, as Llorente teed up club captain Koke to tap home a third.
Gol de Koke. Y tres puntitos. Gran victoria pero que no se nos olvide el robazo que nos han pegado, teníamos que haber jugado gran parte del partido con uno más. Por esas acciones se pueden perder partidos. pic.twitter.com/qG6nJjXWnx

Up next for Atletico Madrid is a midweek home clash against Espanyol on August 28.
