Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff-starrer Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was released in theatres on Thursday, and given the hype around the film’s exorbitant budget, its opening day collections can best be described as mediocre. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan started its box office journey with Rs 15.5 crore nett across all languages in India. Although this makes it the second-biggest opener of the year after Hrithik Roshan-starrer Fighter, which made Rs 24.6 crore on day one, it seems weak in comparison to the monstrous hits that Hindi cinema saw in 2023. Jawan, the biggest opener of 2023, debuted with Rs 75 crore. Even the tenth-biggest opener of the year, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, delivered a bigger haul on day one than Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan has, however, overtaken the opening day collections of Ajay Devgn-starrer Shaitaan, which made Rs 15.21 crore. It also made more on day one than Kareena Kapoor and Tabu-starrer Crew, which debuted with Rs 10.28 crore. 2023 hasn’t been a very strong year for Hindi cinema so far. The biggest hit of the year so far has been Fighter, which made Rs 199.45 crore at the box office, as per Bollywood Hungama.

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was released alongside the Ajay Devgn-starrer Maidaan, which started its box office journey with an equally underwhelming Rs 7.1 crore, as per Sacnilk. Maidaan has largely received good reviews, as opposed to Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which seems to have missed the mark.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is an action-entertainer that Akshay described as a “Bad Boys-like film” during the trailer launch. The film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Sonakshi Sinha, Manushi Chillar, and Alaya F among others. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is produced on a reported budget of over Rs 300 crore by Vashu Bhagnani and Jackky Bhagnani, and gets its title from the original 1998 film, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. The two films have nothing in common, except for their title.

Tiger hasn’t had a success in the cinemas since 2020’s Baaghi 3, which released just a few days before the lockdown. In the last few years, Tiger was seen in Heropanti 2, which made only Rs 24.45 crore at the box office, followed by last year’s Ganapath, which only earned Rs 9.7 crore.

Akshay Kumar, who has been going through a lull at the box office for the last couple of years, with films like Ram Setu, Raksha Bandhan, Samrat Prithviraj, among others, witnessed success with 2023’s OMG 2, which saw him in an extended cameo. The film was led by Pankaj Tripathi, and was co-produced by Akshay. He was last seen in Mission Raniganj, which made Rs 33.74 crore at the box office.
