The Badminton Asia Championships 2024 is set to commence from Tuesday (9 April) in China’s Ningbo with several top players taking part. The competition will run till 14 April and will provide an opportunity for players to boost their rankings ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics which will take place in July. This will be the 41st edition of the tournament that is sanctioned by Badminton Asia.
India’s hopes will rely on HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu. The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will miss this tournament after the former sustained a shoulder injury.
Prannoy will take on Lu Guagzhou of China whereas Kidambi Srikanth will lock horns against Anthony Ginting of Indonesia in the opening round. Sindhu, who had a disappointing quarter-final exit at the Spain Masters recently, will take on Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia in the first round. Lakshya Sen will face a tough challenge against Shi Yu Qi, the top seed, in the first round.
Young Indian shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat will meet Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in a tough start for him as well.
In Satwik-Chirag’s absence, the Indian pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will hope to go deep when they open against seventh-seeded Chinese Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi. Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek K are also in the fray.
Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, who are ahead in the fight for the Olympic race, will face Indonesian combination of Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi, while Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand take on China’s Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, seeded fourth.
In women’s doubles, all hopes will be on Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand pair as well as the pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Castro.
