Pressure mounts on Barcelona veteran as Kylian Mbappe rises in Pichichi race

Kylian Mbappe’s recent penalty goal against Real Sociedad has pushed his tally to three goals in five matches for Real Madrid, placing him just one goal behind the current top scorer, Robert Lewandowski. This puts both players in fierce competition for the top scorer award.

Lewandowski, who won the Pichichi in the 2022-2023 season, is keen to reclaim it, while Mbappe, who has dominated Ligue 1 scoring charts for the last six seasons, is determined to continue his impressive run in La Liga.

As the season progresses into its fifth round, the competition between these two forwards is proving to be highly engaging.

Lewandowski currently leads with four goals, but he will be under pressure to maintain his position as he prepares to face Girona this Sunday.

In contrast, Mbappe sits just behind him with three goals, having recently added to his tally with a strong performance against Real Sociedad, following a double against Betis in the previous round.

In addition to Lewandowski and Mbappe, there are three other forwards who share second place in the scoring charts, each with three goals.

These include Raphinha of Barcelona, Ayoze Perez of Villarreal, and Javi Puado of Espanyol. Their impressive starts to the season further intensify the race for the top scorer award.

With Lewandowski facing Girona, a team against whom he scored twice last season, the pressure is on. Despite those goals last season, Barcelona ended up losing both matches, adding a layer of complexity to this upcoming game.

Lewandowski will need to find the back of the net again if he wants to solidify his position at the top of the scoring chart and fend off the challenge from Mbappe and the other forwards hot on his heels.
