Bayern Munich forced to re-enter the transfer market

Over the course of the summer, it became evident that Bayern Munich were looking to address their defensive issues by reinforcing their backline.

After the signing of Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart, Der Rekordmeister looked to complete the capture of Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah.

However, after a summer-long transfer saga, the record champions failed to reach an agreement with Die Werkself, missing out on one of their key targets.

Against Wolfsburg on Sunday afternoon, it was clear to see that the failure to bolster their rearguard more than planned could hold them back from dethroning Leverkusen this season.

With Ito ruled out for a number of months after fracturing his metatarsal in pre-season, Der Rekordmeister had to rely on Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano.

Nevertheless, the South Korean defender was at fault for Wolfsburg’s second, highlighting the issues at the club.

Therefore, after the final whistle, Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund hinted that business will be conducted before the end of the transfer window in order to address Vincent Kompany’s vulnerable backline:

“We have already said that we are very happy with the squad. But we now have two injured players. We have to take note of that, and we have taken note of that. Not much can happen at the back. It is not our plan, but the transfer window is still open for five days.”
