So, Bayern Munich just whacked Dinamo Zagreb (who were doing their best Hamburg SV impression) 9-2 on the first match of the revamped Champions League first phase. Records were surely broken during that massive win, and that’s what we have today.

Roy Makaay woke up a beast – 21 seasons winning the first match

Bayern won their opening match of the Champions League campaign for the last 21 seasons, stretching back to 2003-04 with a goal difference of +53:

The season before that, 2002/03, was the last time the Bavarians lost the first group stage match. A 3-2 loss to Deportivo La Coruña thanks to a hat-trick from a certain Roy Makaay; that performance led Bayern to sign him the next season.
