The strategy options available at the 2024 F1 British GP

George Russell will start his home race from the Silverstone Circuit on pole position, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton lining up alongside him on the front row.

The threat of rain is ever-present at Silverstone, which could through strategy options out of the window.

However, should it remain dry, what options are available to the teams and drivers during the 52-lap race?

A one-stop strategy appears to be the best option going forward, starting on the C3 Soft compound.

The pit window will open on lap 16 to allow drivers to switch to the C1 Hard tyre to go to the end of the race.

However, should a driver manage to extend their opening stint a little further, taking on the C2 Medium compound for the second stint will also become an option.

Alternatively, drivers can opt to start the grand prix on the Medium compound to go deep into the race, with the pit window for a switch to the Hards opening on lap 24.

However, extending even further will allow them to fit the Soft compound for the final stint and ensure they are suited for a late-race surge.

“The great unknown will be the weather,” said Pirelli's Head of F1 Mario Isola. “If, as forecast, it should rain and the track is wet throughout as was the case in FP3, all the teams have sufficient sets of Intermediates and Wets to run a two-stop race. 

“However, if it’s dry, then a one-stop is quickest on paper, with all three compounds being viable. The C3/C2 strategy is slightly quicker than going from the C3 to the C1, while a strategy without the Soft gives greater flexibility.”
