Former Manchester United and Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has been "hospitalised as a precaution" after suffering chest pains. The Argentinian is in his second season as manager of Independiente, who are currently on a midseason break until May 12. Tevez retired from his playing career, which took him to five countries, in 2022.

Carlos Tevez has returned "satisfactory" results from his first tests in hospital, after the Independiente manager was admitted with chest pains.

The former Manchester United striker retired from his playing career in 2022, having enjoyed 21 years in the professional game across five different countries.

He began his new life in management with Rosario Central - a role he left after just four months, stepping down amid the club's presidential elections as he claimed he "didn't want to do politics".

A year later he took on the Independiente job, and was rewarded for a promising start with a new contract after just four months.

This season, his side finished sixth in Group A of the Copa de Liga Profesional, missing out on the play-offs for the convoluted first stage of the Argentinian domestic campaign. They are now on a mid-season break, with the second stage - a more traditional league format - beginning on May 12.

A week into that interval, Tevez was rushed into hospital on Tuesday evening, having suffered chest pains. The 40-year-old was examined in San Isidro, a quiet town 20km north of the bustling Buenos Aires.

The Argentinian hero, who notched a total of 321 goals across his professional career for club and country, responded positively to the first checks, but is remaining under observation for now.

Independiente released the following statement on X (formerly Twitter): "Our coach, Carlos Tevez, entered La Trinidad hospital in San Isidro with chest pain. They carried out the corresponding studies and they were satisfactory.

"Tomorrow he will continue with a series of exams scheduled in advance as part of a general check-up that is usually carried out. Carlos Tevez will be hospitalized as a precaution until the corresponding studies are completed."
