Crystal Palace vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League results and final ...

21 Aug 2023

The final match of the weekend in the Premier League takes place on Monday night with Crystal Palace hosting Arsenal at Selhurst Park. Roy Hodgson is back once more for another campaign with the Eagles and they made a good start to 2023/24 with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United on the opening weekend.

Arsenal, meanwhile, battled to a 2-1 home victory over Nottingham Forest, with Mikel Arteta’s side hoping to go one better this term after finishing runners-up to Man City in May.

The Gunners have added the likes of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz to their squad over the summer, while Palace lost key winger Wilf Zaha - but have brought in Matheus Franca from Flamengo in their big-money addition so far. Follow all the live action below as Crystal Palace host Arsenal and see the latest odds for the game here.

Red card! Tomiyasu sent off after two quickfire bookings (66’)

FT - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

22:05 , Karl Matchett

Good start to the campaign for Arteta’s men - they face Fulham, Man United and Everton in their next few matches, before the north London derby after the international break.

Palace have one win from their two games.

FT’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:57 , Karl Matchett

And that’s the end of the game! The whistle goes and it’s a big cheer from the away fans, a big clench of the fists from Mikel Arteta - the Gunners really had to dig in for the final half-hour to keep that clean sheet.

Six points from two games for last year’s runners-up.

90+6’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:56 , Karl Matchett

Mitchell lashes as shot just over! Ramsdale flaps at a cross, palms down a ball straight into the left-back’s path...and he smashes over the bar. Decent chance but not made the most of.

Another cross comes in and again the keeper doesn’t keep hold of it first time around - but then he falls on the ball second time around and it’s safe.

He’s patted on the back by his defence but that’s two escapes for him in succession.

90+3’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:52 , Karl Matchett

Back come Palace. It’s not quite as frantic in the last couple of minutes after seeing the seven go up on the board - will the patient approach pay off?

Arsenal are stocked at the back now with Kiwior in there as well and the latest cross from Eze floats over everybody and straight through to Ramsdale.

89’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:49 , Karl Matchett

A succession of crosses and clearances - Ayew and Edouard both almost, but not quite, finding enough space for an effort on goal. Arsenal always doing just enough to get a body in the way or close out some space.

ARS subs: Kiwior and Zinchenko on for Odegaard and Saka.

Seven minutes added on, so there’s still plenty of time for the hosts to find another chance.

86’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:44 , Karl Matchett

Edouard tries to bundle his way through three challenges but never quite has the ball under control to shoot. Eze forces Partey into a hurried clearance - then Mitchell’s cross evades White and Edouard completely misses his attempted header. Wasn’t set at all as the ball came to him - that’s Palace’s best chance.

82’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:42 , Karl Matchett

No real ability for Arsenal to get out of their defensive third at the moment, having taken off Nketiah. A series of long balls just keep coming straight back at them.

Hodgson turns to his bench as he looks for a late point in the Eagles’ first home game of the season.

CRY sub: Ward replaced by Rak-Sakyi

79’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:40 , Karl Matchett

Some questions over Coote over both Tomiyasu bookings - he only had the ball for the throwin for eight seconds before being carded. Looks like the ref made the defender the fall-guy for an overall approach from Arsenal, then carded him again for that minor altercation minutes later.

75’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:38 , Karl Matchett

Palace trying to mount some sustained pressure but they are failing to really combine in the most dangerous areas.

Arsenal boss Arteta looks to try and regain a bit of control in the centre with another midfield sub.

ARS sub: Jorginho on for Nketiah

71’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:33 , Karl Matchett

Boos and arguments all around.

Eze skips past two tackles, Rice evaded and Partey too - then goes down in the box wanting a penalty. Partey is furious and wants a yellow card for a dive; Eze is adamant it’s a spot-kick. The truth is it’s neither: there was marginal contact, so not a dive, but nowhere near enough for a spot-kick.

PAL sub - Ahamada on for Schlupp

ARS sub - Gabriel on for Martinelli

66’ RED CARD! - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:26 , Karl Matchett

Well, that might change matters! Tomiyasu was booked a few moments ago for time-wasting, now he’s shown a second yellow for pulling down Ayew as the forward span away from him. Didn’t look a whole lot in it - another not-top-notch decision from Mr. Coote in the middle, but off trudges Tomiyasu.

64’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:25 , Karl Matchett

Partey strikes a shot from range which is tipped over; Odegaard attempts a volley which is wildly off-target.

Roy Hodgson is shouting ineffectually from the tactical area on the touchline; Palace have barely had a touch in the Arsenal half in this half. Havertz strikes one just wide of the far post from a narrow angle - decent hit but always a few yards wide.

We’ve just caught a glimpse of Franca in the stands - they’ll hope to have him back soon.

60' - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:19 , Karl Matchett

A dismal effort from Eze - his clipped free-kick flies miles over the bar.

The ref twice hurries along Arsenal, with Havertz and Partey taking their time over restarts. Then Tomiyasu does the same thing and the left-back takes the fall for the team’s repeat offences - he’s booked.

Into the final half-hour we go and Palace will presumably have to step up their approach soon.

56’ - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:16 , Karl Matchett

Palace try to mount an instant response with Doucoure and Ayew linking, but the latter lashes a shot into the side-netting from a poor angle.

Eze is then fouled by Saliba right on the edge of the box and it’s a dangerous free-kick for the hosts. Eze stands over the set-piece himself, along with Andersen.

53’ GOAL! - Palace 0-1 Arsenal

21:12 , Karl Matchett

Goal!!

Odegaard rolls it to his left, Johnstone dives the wrong way and the Gunners are ahead!

48’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

21:11 , Karl Matchett

Down in the box goes Nketiah and Johnstone takes him down - penalty given!

A VAR check looks at a potential foul by Partey, but it’s not given and the spot-kick remains.

Second half - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

21:10 , Karl Matchett

Back underway for the second half.

HT - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:53 , Karl Matchett

82nd league appearance in a row for Saka today - equalising Paul Merson’s club record.

HT - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:48 , Karl Matchett

One last attack in the half for Palace but Eze is crowded out and then Ayew can’t deliver a cross from a decent area.

There’s the half-time whistle and it’s all square at the break, with Nketiah hitting the post in Arsenal’s best chance.

44’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:46 , Karl Matchett

A quick free-kick opens space down the right but Partey’s cross is overhit. It reaches Martinelli who opts to smash it full on the volley....high, wide and not very handsome.

We’ll have two minutes added on at the end of this first half.

42’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:43 , Karl Matchett

Referee David Coote is being booed by both sets of fans now and little wonder, after his latest questionable decision. This time he gives a free-kick to Arsenal for...nothing, as far as we can see.

Saka cuts in and tries to shoot but he’s never set and fires miles off-target. Palace doing well to frustrate the Gunners for long stretches. Odegaard fires in a shot which is tipped over by Johnstone - a first shot on target.

38’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:40 , Karl Matchett

Quick huddle for the players to get a word from the coaches after a clash of heads.

The ref has to call both sets of players back to get on with the game.

A little over five minutes to go until the break...plus injury time, of course, which could be anything these days.

34’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:38 , Karl Matchett

Terrible error from Saliba - and then a brilliant recovery challenge! The French defender loses possession to Ayew who streaks away into the box, but the centre-back just about makes it back in time to get a toe to the ball and win the tackle with Palace fans baying for a penalty.

Just a moment before, Declan Rice had a problem with his contact lens - but there’s nothing wrong with his vision as he plays in Nketiah for another chance...only for the striker to send his shot well over the bar.

30’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:31 , Karl Matchett

Odegaard delivers a free-kick from the left channel and Partey attempts a long-range header, but he’s off-balance and stooping, with the header bouncing harmlessly away and wide.

From the restart though Palace give away the ball trying to play out and Nketiah makes a brilliant turn past Andersen - and though his left-footed shot beats Johnstone, it just won’t curl back inside the post and clips the woodwork, bouncing away to safety from a Palace perspective.

26’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:28 , Karl Matchett

Ayew is Palace’s biggest outlet in this opening quarter but his latest cross is easily claimed.

At the other end, Nketiah winds past two players, gets into the box and goes down - no penalty says the ref! Havertz then gets chopped down mid-stride by Ayew and he’s quickly shown a yellow card.

22’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:25 , Karl Matchett

Palace pushing forward a little more now. Eze dribbles past a tackle and hammers in a shot - it’s blocked, falls to Doucoure and he lashes in another effort, but this one is well off-target.

Arsenal a little more patient and probing with their approach, working spaces and trying to find an opening, waiting for Palace’s defence to mis-step and leave a gap.

18’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:22 , Karl Matchett

Tomiyasu embarks on a run down the left wing and takes on two - but a crunching tackle from Ward ends the burst and gives Arsenal a corner. Positive run from the Japanese full-back, who is in on the left today.

14’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:18 , Karl Matchett

Johnstone with a bit of catching practice early on from some wayward crosses.

At the other end of the pitch, Ramsdale comes flying out to get fingertips on a much better delivery from Ayew - and the goalkeeper is lucky the ball just evades two Palace players in the middle of the box.

Now Edouard is next to try his luck with a shot from closer range - and he asks for handball against White, who waves the claim away. Eze fizzes a strike from range, which Ramsdale saves with comfort.

10’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:12 , Karl Matchett

Declan Rice getting on the ball plenty in the opening stages, but not too much in the way of movement ahead of him.

Nketiah and Saka try to link up but Palace have the numbers back to defend - then Saka’s curling ball into the six-yard box is very easy for Johnstone to claim.

6’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:09 , Karl Matchett

A fair few misplaced passes by the Gunners despite their dominance in these stages. Nketiah slides in to close down Johnstone but Palace pass their way out and mount a first real instance of pressure - Ayew’s cross-shot is deflected out and away by Saliba. Good defensive work.

3’ - Palace 0-0 Arsenal

20:05 , Karl Matchett

An early opening for Martinelli after Havertz finds him in acres of space - but the Brazilian opts against a quick shot, checks inside and runs into a crowd. Waste of a good sight, in truth.

Quick pressure from the Gunners though - Saka then wins a corner after a clipped cross is headed out.

Under ten minutes to kick-off - south-east meets north in the latest early-season London derby.

Will a lack of new attacking signings at Palace hamper them on their first match at Selhurst this term?

The Gunners already have an extra match under their belts this season, of course, after winning the Community Shield at Wembley.

Three points tonight for the visitors will keep them on Man City’s early pace-setting points tally, which will remain the marker for how close Mikel Arteta’s men can go to another title tilt.

As for Palace, they were beaten at home and away by Arsenal last season - so is this just about setting a base for their own campaign and ensuring home soil is solid enough in 23/24? Or is there hope of something more?

Mason Greenwood will not play for Manchester United again, club announce

19:41 , Karl Matchett

If you missed the earlier big news from the Premier League:

Mason Greenwood will leave Manchester United after both parties concluded it would be inappropriate for the forward to continue his career at Old Trafford.

United will instead work to find Greenwood a club elsewhere after chief executive Richard Arnold concluded an internal investigation in which he decided that the 21-year-old did not commit criminal offences and that audio of him sounding as though he was trying to force himself upon a woman did not represent the full picture.

Criminal charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in February.

But Arnold determined – and Greenwood agreed – that it would be better if he were to move elsewhere and discussions are continuing as to whether his contract will be terminated or if he should be sold or loaned.

Mikel Arteta has not ruled out returning to the transfer market as he expects Arsenal to be without Jurrien Timber for the season after the summer signing suffered a knee injury against Nottingham Forest.

It was confirmed earlier in the week that Dutch defender Timber will go under the knife after tests showed ligament damage – with Arteta also insisting the number of serious injuries suffered so early into the campaign is a “big worry” for player welfare.

Timber limped out of Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Forest on Saturday, with the club confirming on Wednesday he suffered ligament damage.

Arteta described it as a “huge blow” and could sign another player as a result:

Roy Hodgson admits every Premier League manager is looking for a player like Declan Rice to anchor their team as he prepares his Crystal Palace side to come up against the England midfielder on Monday.

The 24-year-old’s £105million move to Arsenal from West Ham last month made him one of four players in his position to have been bought for a nine-figure fee by European clubs during the last eight months, as the value placed by top sides on central midfielders has rocketed.

Rice is part of an elite group that includes World Cup-winner Enzo Fernandez and his new Chelsea team-mate Moises Caicedo – both signed by the Blues for British record fees – and England’s Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid in July, with each having been signed for fees that could exceed £100m.

Hodgson’s Palace began the Premier League season with a 1-0 win at promoted Sheffield United but face a stern test when last year’s runners-up arrive at Selhurst Park, with Mikel Arteta’s side buoyed by the arrival of Rice to add steel to their midfield ahead of their return to the Champions League.

And a look back at what has happened so far for the Gunners, too.

Arsenal:

OUT - Granit Xhaka to Leverkusen, £12m; Matt Turner to Forest, £7m; Auston Trusty to Sheffield United, £4m; Pablo Mari to Monza, £3m; Marquinhos to Nantes, loan; Ainsley Maitland-Niles to Lyon, free.

IN - Declan Rice from West Ham, £105m; Kai Havertz from Chelsea, £65m; Jurrien Timber from Ajax, £35m; David Raya from Brentford, loan with option.

For Mikel Arteta it seems to be all about a midfield revamp, with two of tonight’s starting three being new signings. One down side is Timber already being sidelined through injury, however.

Here’s a look back at the summer transfer work from both clubs...so far, at least.

Palace:

OUT - Jack Butland to Rangers, free; Wilf Zaha to Galatasaray, free; Luka Milivojevic to Shabab Al-Ahli, free; James McArthur, retired

IN - Jefferson Lerma from Bournemouth, free; Matheus Franca from Flamengo, £26m inc. add-ons.

Brazilian teenager Franca is obviously the big attraction for the Selhurst Park fans so far - but the new No11 is currently sidelined through injury.

The opening weekend:

Arsenal 2-1 Nottingham Forest

The Gunners looked in good shape early on in the match and first-half strikes from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka - the latter an absolute worldie - put them well in control by the break.

Forest hit back through Taiwo Awoniyi to make it a nervous finish, but three home points remained on the cards throughout in truth.

The opening weekend:

Sheffield United 0-1 Crystal Palace

A strike early into the second half from Odsonne Edouard gave the Eagles the victory on the first weekend of the campaign. Roy Hodgson’s team certainly dominated but the cutting edge was missing at times, but three points arrived regardless.

Confirmed team news!

Palace offer no real surprises - but it’s worth noting Cheick Doucoure is in the team, amid rumours of a transfer to Liverpool before the window shuts.

Arsenal bring Takehiro Tomiyasu into the side to replace the injured Jurrien Timber but otherwise there’s no surprises there either - new goalkeeper arrival David Raya is on the bench.

Palace XI: Johnstone, Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Doucoure, Lerma, Eze, Schlupp, Edouard, Ayew

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Partey, White, Saliba, Tomiyasu, Rice, Havertz, Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli, Nketiah

How to watch Crystal Palace v Arsenal in Premier League

16:02 , Karl Matchett

After a narrow win over Nottingham Forest on the opening day, Arsenal will be looking for a second successive victory as they aim to push Manchester City for the title again.

Arsenal have won their last two matches against Crystal Palace, but with Roy Hodgson in charge again, Palace fans will be hoping for a repeat of their 3-0 win over the Gunners in April 2022.

After shelling out for the likes of now-injured Jurriën Timber and Declan Rice in the summer, Mikel Arteta will be hoping his side can find their footing and although it’s only early in the season, if they want to challenge for the top spot, they cannot afford any slip-ups.

It will be the Eagles’ first home game of the campaign after winning at recently-promoted Sheffield United on the opening weekend.
