Analysis: What now for Brentford after Schade blow?

Brentford have been dealt a huge blow after Thomas Frank confirmed Kevin Schade needs surgery on an adductor injury and will be out of action for “months.”

Schade was warming up before Brentford’s 3-1 defeat to Everton last Saturday when he fell in pain after taking a shot with his left foot. The 21-year-old forward received treatment on the pitch, before limping off while rubbing his left thigh.

Scans on Monday revealed the extent of the damage and confirmed another setback for Brentford, just over a week after Rico Henry ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Henry is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Henderson off injured on Palace debut

Dean Henderson's Crystal Palace debut at former club Manchester United was cut short by injury in the first half of Tuesday's Carabao Cup third-round tie.

The goalkeeper lasted just 19 minutes on his return to Old Trafford with an apparent thigh problem.

Henderson, who moved to Selhurst Park this summer for an initial £15million, was hurt while clearing upfield. He grimaced after kicking the ball following a controlling touch and then raised his hand to call for attention.

After receiving brief treatment on the field to his upper right leg, Henderson was replaced by Sam Johnstone.

Henderson spent last term on loan at Nottingham Forest but had surgery on a thigh injury suffered in January, which forced him to miss the remainder of the season.

Johnstone was beaten just moments after coming on as Alejandro Garnacho gave the hosts a 21st-minute lead, before Casemiro struck a second six minutes later.

Sofyan Amrabat makes his first Manchester United start against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, while Harry Maguire and Mason Mount return to the starting XI after injury.

Amrabat's debut following his deadline-day switch was delayed after he sustained an injury that forced him to leave international duty with Morocco early, but he made a late cameo in the win against Burnley last time out.

United make seven changes for the third-round tie, with Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri included from the off.

USMNT's Adams poised for Bournemouth debut

Tyler Adams could make his Bournemouth debut against Stoke City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

The USMNT midfielder joined Bournemouth from Leeds last month for an initial fee in the region of £23million.

He had been recovering from a hamstring problem that required a surgical procedure in March, but after stepping up his rehabilitation in recent weeks, looks set to be named at least among the substitutes.

Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola said: "We have the chance though — if he trains well today — to put Tyler Adams in the squad.

"He wants to help. We have to take the decision after training, but I think and hope he's available to be on the bench."

Defender Lloyd Kelly will not be involved after he sustained an injury against Brighton, which could keep him out until the next international break.

Chris Mepham missed that game after also sustaining an injury, while forward Luis Sinisterra is cup-tied having featured for parent club Leeds earlier in the competition.

No Jimenez pressure, insists Silva

Getty Images

Marco Silva says there is no pressure on Raul Jimenez as the Fulham striker continues his search for a Fulham goal.

The Mexico international has started all six of Fulham's league games this season, after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

He has been tasked with filling the void left by Aleksandar Mitrovic, who joined Al Hilal in August, but Silva reiterated that he has been pleased with his performances.

"He’s improving, understanding better what we want from him and a player in that position. It’s completely different to what he did in the last few seasons. But if he’s playing, it’s because he’s doing something well. The competition is good.

"Looking at the numbers, I understand the question but many people aren’t recognising what he’s doing. He’s more than just a player to put the ball in the net. I said the same last season (with Mitrovic)."

He added: "I hope that he he doesn't feel too much pressure from (us). It should be a natural pressure for him, that a striker who should create and score. But I wouldn't like to see him with a lot of pressure to score. The game has to come naturally, that's the way I see football. He can be decisive doing different things. I don't feel that he (feels) a lot of pressure, to be honest. He's in a good place."

Fulham face Norwich on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup and Silva says he will rotate for the game.

He will though be without Sasa Lukic, Adama Traore and Tosin Adarabioyo due to injury. Lukic has returned to training after a groin problem according to Silva, while Traore is recovering from a hamstring strain. Kenny Tete also missed the Palace game on Saturday with a groin issue.

Frank 'doesn't know' what will happen with Toney

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank admitted he does not know what will happen with Ivan Toney in the future but says that he doesn't want to sell the striker.

Speaking to Sky Sports earlier this month, Frank said that Toney could leave the club at the "right price" and the "right time."

However, speaking ahead of his side's Carabao Cup fixture against Arsenal tomorrow evening, the Danish coach reaffirmed his desire to keep his best players at Brentford describing the 27-year-old as a "top player."

He said: "I don’t know. The only thing I’m focusing on is the game tomorrow. For me as a coach, I don’t want to sell him. I want my best players.

"Of course, I say to Phil (Giles, director of football) and Matthew (Benham, owner) don’t sell him. The same I said with David (Raya). Ivan is a world-class player. So why should we sell a world-class player? I would rather want him to play here for the rest of his contract, but that’s not up to me to decide.

"One of the most difficult things in football is to score a goal for a team or for a player and there’s not many players that got past 20 goals in the Premier League. I think last year there were two — (Harry) Kane and (Erling) Haaland. (Ivan’s) a top player so I understand why there is interest but I like to keep him."

When being interviewed on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Toney, told host Steven Bartlett about his admiration for several other Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

Ahead of the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was also asked about the England international.

The Spanish manager said: "They have a really strong squad and have been doing terrifically well in the last few seasons. Credit to Frank and his coaching staff as what they've done is incredible."

Arteta ahead of Brentford trip: 'There are a lot of players who need minutes'

Mikel Arteta says that there are several members of his Arsenal squad who need minutes ahead of his side's Carabao Cup game against Brentford tomorrow.

The Carabao Cup is a competition Arsenal have not won since 1993 and last season they were eliminated at this stage by Brighton and Hove Albion.

Arteta rotated almost his entire first-team team in that game and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that the lack of rest for international players means he will be rotating his players for their game against Newcastle United tonight.

The Arsenal boss recently said that the heavy fixture schedule was dangerous for players and admits that the extensive injury list has taken the option of rotation out of his hands.

"We only had one Champions League game. It’s still early. It’s true that they play with the national teams and they’re coming from a season where they had a World Cup and some players played 60-odd games. We’ve been unlucky.

EFL Cup - Figure 11

"Jurrien (Timber), for example, was due to other reasons, while Bukayo (Saka) was because someone stepped on him. There are some traumatic injuries, others are more muscular. We try to find ways to avoid them but they’re a part of football.

"It's true that we have (bought) a lot of internationals in the last few windows and they have quite a lot of exposure to minutes but at the moment we have a squad that is not 24 players. To change 11 or 12 players tomorrow is just not a possibility we have.

"There are a lot of players who need minutes. If you go through the squad there are lots of players who haven’t had minutes and they are going to need exposure that’s for sure."

Arsenal fell four points behind Manchester City in the league and the result led to critique as to whether Arsenal have the firepower required to challenge for the title.

"It's the expectations that we created and the culture that we created as we want to win every single match. We have won six matches, drawn two, won a title and it is not enough. We have six top, top players injured. It is what it is. We want to be better, that's for sure," he said.

EFL Cup - Figure 12

"On Wednesday night (vs PSV) we were incredible. It was a joy to watch. Then we draw a match in the conditions we did and you have to improve. It's about consistency and hitting the level that we want every day.

"It depends how you analyse it and where you take it (from). Do you take the last pass or the two passes in the zone because the positions we get in against the blocks and the positions we put our wingers in is higher than anyone else in the league a lot of the time.

"To produce the moment that replicates the stats it is too simplistic."

UEFA moves congress from Madrid after Rubiales scandal

UEFA has moved next year’s annual congress from Madrid to Paris in the ongoing fallout of a scandal involving former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales, who was also a vice president of UEFA.

At a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee in Cyprus on Tuesday, the organisation confirmed the event schedule for February 8, 2024 would be moved from the Spanish capital to the French capital.

Arteta: 'Possibility' Saka misses Bournemouth trip

Mikel Arteta has ruled Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli out of Arsenal's Carabao Cup tie against Brentford tomorrow.

Thomas Partey and Jurrien Timber are also out meaning Arsenal have a depleted squad for the third round tie match in west London.

Saka played his 86th consecutive Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday but could barely walk as he hobbled off the pitch during stoppage time and Arteta conceded he could miss the weekend trip to Bournemouth.

"It’s a possibility yes. He was limping quite badly after the match. We had to get him off the field which is never a good sign. He hasn’t been able to participate in the session," Arteta said.

Rice was substituted at half-time in the game and the £105 million midfielder has not yet recovered.

"He hasn’t trained yet. He couldn’t carry on in the game. He was uncomfortable. Hopefully it’s not something big. We are confident it’s nothing big.

"He had to leave the pitch and that’s never a good sign. Hopefully it will progress in the next few days. He won’t be available. Let’s see if he has a chance or not (for the weekend).

Trossard and Martinelli both missed the north London derby with hamstring complaints.

"Trossard won’t be available. He did some activity, that’s when he felt it. He hasn’t trained yet. Not available for tomorrow. Let's see for the weekend (on Martinelli).

"It’s a long list. We need to adapt. The squad we have at the moment is really short and we need players back, that’s for sure."

England's Wiegman set for Netherlands reunion

Wiegman played for the Dutch national team before overseeing their Euro 2017 win on home soil and finishing as runners-up at the 2019 World Cup in France.

The 53-year-old, who has subsequently matched those managerial achievements with England, told a press conference that being back in her home country with the Lionesses was "very nice, a little bit strange too - of course I have some memories here".

She added: "I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. It's just very special to be here and to play the opponents."

The match is England's second in Group A1 after they beat Scotland 2-1 in Sunderland on Friday, when the Netherlands opened their campaign with a 2-1 loss away to Belgium.

Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing the Carabao Cup as an opportunity for Chelsea to win a trophy.

Chelsea have endured a difficult start to the season with only one win from their opening six Premier League matches.

Attention switches away from the league tomorrow night, however, with Brighton & Hove Albion the visitors to Stamford Bridge.

"It is one of our objectives in this season," Pochettino said of what he hopes to get from the all Premier League tie. "We need to think this is one opportunity to win a trophy.

"Maybe the feelings after the defeat on Sunday (against Aston Villa) are not the best but I feel it is about to move on to get the players the confidence and the trust.

"It is a different competition and we need to change our mood. Yesterday and today we were talking a lot – trying to breathe more confidence into the team – and I think we are going to be ready for tomorrow."

Schade out for several months with adductor injury

Kevin Schade will undergo surgery after suffering an adductor injury during the warm-up before Brentford's 3-1 defeat to Everton on Saturday and will be ruled out for months.

The 21-year-old becomes the second Brentford player this season to suffer a long-term injury after Rico Henry sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on September 16.

Before picking up the injury, Schade was named in the starting line-up for the game at the Gtech Community Stadium before he was replaced by Keane Lewis-Potter.

It is a blow for Schade who had started the season brightly by scoring against Crystal Palace last month and was in line to make his fourth start of the season. His head coach spoke about how much of a loss the German forward will be for his side.

Frank said: "That (Schade injury) is a blow of course. He is a player that we have big expectations for. I think he was starting to show some of his fantastic abilities.

"The latest with the goal against Crystal Palace. That happens. It’s football. This is life. There will be challenges we need to work our way through."

The Danish coach also confirmed that Ben Mee and Mikkel Damsgaard had sustained injuries saying: "Mee will be some weeks with the muscle injury. Damsgaard is seeing a knee specialist."

Atletico confirm Correa knee injury

(Photo: Getty Images)

Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa is expected to be out for between a week and two weeks after his club confirmed that he had sustained a knee injury.

The 28-year-old forward sustained the injury during the final minutes of his side's 3-1 victory over Real Madrid on Sunday after being tackled by Jude Bellingham, who received a yellow card for the challenge.

Atletico confirmed Correa's injury in a statement which read: "Correa suffered a grade 1 sprain of the medial collateral ligament of the knee.

"Our forward will do individualized work in this Tuesday's session and progress is pending."

Correa has made five appearances for the Spanish side this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

The Argentina international was a late substitute during the victory, with goals from Antoine Griezmann and a brace from former Real striker Alvaro Morata sealing an important win for Diego Simeone's side.
