Eid-ul-Fitr 2023 Date: Eid ul Fitr is a religious festival for all Muslims around the world. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which devotees fast from dawn to dusk. This year it is expected to be celebrated on Friday, April 21, or Saturday, April 22. However, the exact date is subject to the sighting of the moon of Shawwal, 1444, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.

The International Astronomy Center has announced that Islamic countries are expected to sight the crescent of Shawwal on Thursday, April 20, which will likely be the end of Ramadan, Gulf News reported. “However, it may not be possible to spot the crescent with the naked eye or a telescope from all parts of Asia and Australia, although it is possible that some Islamic countries may be able to sight it,” the report stated further. If the moon is sighted on Friday, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on April 22, Saturday.

History

The festival is known to have been started by the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. Certain traditions believe it to have originated in Medina after the migration of Muhammad from Mecca.

The day stands for expressing gratitude to the almighty Allah for all that we have. It is believed that Muslims were commanded by Allah to continue fasting till the last day of Ramadan. According to the Holy book, Quran, devotees must pay the Zakat al-Fitr before offering the prayers for Eid.

Significance

Traditionally, Eid ul Fitr begins at the sunset on the first sighting of the crescent moon, which is also known as ‘Chand Raat’. Chand Raat is a time of celebration with families and friends gathered in open areas at the end of the last day of Ramadan to spot the new moon. During Aitkaaf, the people spend the last 10 days of Ramadan in the mosque worshipping Allah. Once the moon is sighted, they wish each other, “Chand Raat Mubarak”.

After Eid prayers, families and friends come together and enjoy eating desserts and a wide variety of food such as Sivayya. That’s why this Eid is also known as Meethi Eid.
