Gareth picks out the positives
“We knew to expect that and we played from the back really well. I’m not unhappy with a lot about the performance.
“In the end it’s that ruthless moment that decides the game, but there were some important individual performances for us.
“Anthony [Gordon] was excellent, in both sides of his game. Ben Chilwell was very good, he was aggressive in his defending and he gave us width. We have to manage him carefully because he’s been out for a while.”
Southgate also revealed after the game that captain Harry Kane will return to Bayern Munich for further assessment on an injury which he reported to camp with, after being ruled out of both this game and next Tuesday’s match with Belgium.
And after stand-in skipper Kyle Walker came off in the first half, Southgate says the Manchester City defender will be assessed too.
“Kyle felt something, but we don’t know yet how serious it is.
“He’s a player who hasn’t been injured very often so he’s not quite sure what it is. We’ll assess it over the next few days.”
