Hello and welcome to the highlights of the second day of the fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia happening at the Kennington Oval, London.

Australia 295/10

Root comes on and takes the wicket on the first ball! Australia all out! Pat Cummins cleared his legs to hit over long-on. Ben Stokes stretched to push the ball in the air and then took a catch.

And with that wicket, it’ll be stumps on day 2. Australia has taken a 12-run lead. Steve Smith scored 71 and got good support from the lower order to get the lead after a middle order collapse.

Woakes took three wickets while Broad, Wood, and Root took two each. Anderson got one wicket.

Day three will see England trying to score as many runs possible as it only trails by 12 runs.

Australia 295/9

Hazlewood now punches it towards covers and takes a double. Some great shots by the Australian number 11!

Australia 292/9

Woakes traps Murphy in front and umpire gives it OUT! Murphy reviews straight away. Umpire’s call on height which means Murphy is gone. A 49-run stand between Cummins and him is broken! Josh Hazlewood is off the mark with a four towards the deep point! Too wide and Hazlewood times it well.

Australia 288/8 in 100 overs

Murphy smacks yet another pull towards fine leg. Dan Lawrence was there and he somehow manages to keep it inside. Saved a certain boundary there. Woakes induces and edge that falls short of the second slip and the ball goes underneath the diving Zak Crawley. A single. Four runs in that over.

Australia 284/8

Anderson bowls down the leg and Murphy tucks it towards fine leg region for four! The scores are level now. And with that single by Murphy, Australia takes the lead.

Australia 277/8

Anderson into the attack. Three runs in that over. Only six runs remaining now.

Australia 273/8

What a shot by Murphy! Wood bowls short and Murphy hooks it for a SIX towards square leg. Another bouncer and another SIX by Murphy in the same region this time covers more distance. 13 runs in that over. Australia only 10 runs behind now.

Australia 260/8

Woakes bowls one full and Cummins swings hard, gets a thick outside edge that goes towards the deep third region for a four! Australia is getting close to the England total. A bit wide by Woakes and Murphy slashes it towards point for four! Solid shot that.

Australia 250/8

Todd Murphy opens his account with a SIX! Wood bowls him short and Murphy picks it and places it towards the square leg region. He tries it again on the next ball but is beaten. Both Cummins and Murphy are trying to swing hard at the ball. 250-up for Australia.

Australia 239/8

Smith charges down the track against Woakes, lofts the ball over mid-off but not enough power to go the boundary. Two runs. Smith once again tries to go big towards leg side but gets a top edge. The ball went high up in the air and Bairstow had to run back but takes it in the end comfortably. Smith goes for 71. Australia eight down.

Australia 235/7

Mark Wood is back on as well. Smith heaves one towards the square leg region but the deep fielder isn’t anywhere near the ball. That single brings up fifty partnership between Smith and Cummins. Three runs in that over.

Australia 232/7 in 88 overs

Woakes into the attack. A wide yorker, Cummins tries to slash it, gets an inside edge that races away for a four towards fine leg! Four runs in that over.

Australia 225/7

The partnership is now worth 40 runs. A crucial stand for Australia as it tries to get closer to England’s total. 58 runs left.

Australia 223/7

Broad tries a bouncer, Cummins tries to play it, gets a top edge and the ball goes for boundary towards the fine leg!

Australia 218/7

Anderson bowls it short and Smith pulls it for four! Now, bowls too wide outside off stump and Smith stretches his arms to place it towards the covers region. Three runs. Seven runs in that over.

Australia 211/7

What a beauty that was from Stuart Broad! Ball swung in hard, completely beating Cummins. Huge appeal. Umpire took his time but raised his finger. Cummins reviews it and the wickets are missing! NOT OUT!

Aus 210/7

Anderson to share the new ball. A maiden to start with.

Australia 210/7

Second new ball has been taken and Stuart Broad comes into the attack. Smith smacks the ball towards the long-on region for a four! Brings up his fifty in style. Another full ball, Anderson has to run towards the boundary to stop. Puts in a dive to save the four. Or not. Umpires check it and its a boundary.

Three sub fielders for England

England began the session with three sub fielders. Moeen Ali, James Anderson, and Mark Wood were out of the field.

Last over, Anderson came back into the field.

Aus 201/7

Brook continues. First ball he bowls down the leg. Bairstow is keeping up for him and couldn’t collect the ball. Bye signalled. Cummins punches it towards square leg and 200-up for Australia! Three runs in that over.

Australia 198/7

Is that Steve Smith run out? England think so. Umpires refer it to third umpire. Replays show a diving Smith still is inches away from the crease. But Bairstow might have broken the stumps before the ball was in his hands. Smith was out of his crease but Bairstow broke the wicket earlier and its not out! What a moment! Smith survives.

Here’s what happened: Smith went for a double. Fielder at midwicket threw at the keepers end. Smith dived, Bairstow dislodged the bails but too quick.

Australia 193/7

Brook continues! Gentle medium pace is swinging. Down the leg and Cummins tucks it towards fine leg region for four!

Australia 188/7

Woakes to continue his spell. Two runs to start the session with.

Back for the final session

The players are back in the middle. Will be interesting to see how Smith approaches this session with Australia still 97 runs behind.

Australia 186/7 - Tea

Harry Brook introduced for the first time. He’s bowling his gentle medium pace to Steve Smith, who is in no mood to take any risk facing those, happy to defend and leave them alone. A maiden. That will be Tea.

A great session for England having taken five wickets. Steve Smith is losing his partners here with still 97 runs to go. How far can he take Australia to? We’ll find out soon.

Australia 186/7

Chris Woakes into the attack. Induces an edge off Pat Cummins’ bat but falls short of the third slip. He has troubled Cummins a lot throughout the over but no success.

Australia 186/7 in 73 overs

Both Smith and Starc dealing in singles here. Not many boundary balls on offer and Australia is happy to play risk free cricket. The trail is under 100 now but still a long way to for the visitors.

And just as we say it, Starc tries to pull Wood but gets a top edge and gets caught inside the circle. Seven down Australia. Three runs in that over and a wicket.

Broad vs Labuschagne - mind games

Australia 180/6 in 71 overs

Smith is the big wicket here but if England manages to get the lower order out quickly, Australia will remain on the backfoot Runs not coming easily here. Aim will be to play till the Tea without losing any wicket.

Australia 173/6

Mark Wood is back into the attack. Three runs in that over.

Australia 170/6

Sweetly timed that by Carey! A SIX over over long-on. Root gets his man on the very next ball as Carey tries to drive it towards covers but the ball was in the air and Stokes grabs a low catch. Six down Australia! Eventful over comes to an end.

Australia 164/5 in 67 overs

Steve Smith hasn’t looked too comfortable here. He has been constantly beaten and not been timing the ball consistently.

Australia 161/5

Alex Carey gets off the mark with a beautiful cover drive off James Anderson! Five runs in that over.

Australia 156/5 in 64 overs

Root comes on after drinks. A huge appeal by England against Alex Carey who was trying to sweep. Umpire says not out. However, Stokes reviews it. Ball tracking says the impact is outside off stump. Review wasted. Three runs in that over.

Australia 153/5 in 63 overs

An eventful first hour this of the second session. Three wickets have fallen this session: two by Broad and one by Anderson. Steve Smith is still at the crease with new batter Alex Carrey. Australia still 130 runs behind.

A wicket after 213 balls for Anderson

James Anderson picked a wicket after 213 balls. His previous wicket was of Pat Cummins in the first innings of the fourth Test.

Australia 152/5 in 62 overs

Mark Wood is into the attack. Only one over for Root. A single in that over.

Australia 151/5

Anderson into the attack and he gets Mitchell Marsh OUT chopped onto his stumps!. England will feel on top here in the second session. Australia has lost three wickets inside an hour and is not five down with still 132 runs behind. A successful over comes to an end.

Australia 150/4

Joe Root is introduced for the first time in this innings! With no Moeen Ali, Root will have a lot of work to do here. That is too far down the leg side. Smith tries to go hard at it but only gets the toe end of the bat. Four runs in that over. 150-up for Australia.

Australia 146/4

A terrific stroke by Marsh there. Too full by Woakes and Marsh just timed perfectly. A straight drive to end the over.

Australia 139/4 in 58 overs

Quiet two overs there. Smith and Marsh not taking too much risk there. Woakes bowled a great over, beating Smith twice.

Australia 137/4

Another huge appeal by Broad against new batter Mitchell Marsh but this time umpire says not out. A chat between Ben Stokes and Broad. Height might be the problem and no DRS taken. Marsh follows it up with a huge SIX over long on! A touch fuller and Marsh swings his arms. Great shot!

Australia 127/4 in 54 overs

Broad bowls a touch fuller and Travis Head times perfectly towards on-side for a four! Quite a way to get off the mark. However, on the next ball, Broad gets his revenge as Head nicks one to the keeper. OUT! Two quick wickets to start the session for England. Another successful over for Broad and England.

150 wickets for Broad vs Australia!

That wicket of Khawaja gets Broad his 150th wicket vs Australia in Test matches.

Australia 123/3

Woakes starts off with an almost a yorker delivery but Steve Smith times it perfectly towards midwicket for a four! Another one going down the leg and Bairstow isn’t able to stop it. Four byes to end the over.

Australia 115/3

Stuart Broad to start the session coming round the wicket to Khawaja. Board traps Khawaja in front and celebrappeal follows. Umpire gives it out. Khawaja reviews after a brief discussion. Three reds and Khawaja is gone in the first over after Lunch. He’s gone after scoring 47 off 157 balls. A wicket-maiden after lunch.

Back for the second session

Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja are back in the middle with Australia trailing England by 174 runs. Only 54 runs were scored in the 26 overs of the first session. Will Australia change the tempo. It certainly seemed as if Smith trying to be busy at the crease. An interesting session coming up.

Fifth Test could be David Warner’s final match, says McGrath

Warner has scored just 225 runs in the nine innings in this Ashes at a mediocre average of 25.00, which includes only one half-century (66) that he made during the second Test at Lord’s.

Ashes 2023: Fifth Test could be David Warner’s final match, says McGrath

Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath said David Warner’s career could be “coming towards an end” unless the veteran opener scores big in the second innings of the ongoing fifth and final Ashes Test against England.

Australia 115/2 - Lunch

Back of the length, on the hips and Khawaja tucks it fine for a four! Was a risky shot though with the leg slip placed but the ball went right in the gap between the keeper and the leg slip. A single to finish the over and the first session on day 2.

Not many runs were scored in the session. Australian batters were happy to block the balls and only attack that were meant to be hit. England will be happy to get Labuschagne out and not concede too many runs. With no Moeen Ali, will the England fast bowlers be able to continue to bowl with such consistency in the next session? We’ll find out soon.

Australia 109/2

Four! Khawaja was not in full control of the shot. A thick outside edge that runs past the fielder at gully. Runs coming in for Australia in the last few overs now.

Australia 104/2

Half volley by Anderson and Smith drives it straight for a four! 100-up for Australia. Another full delivery and Smith once again places it towards the off-side for another boundary. Back-to-back fours!

Australia 96/2 in 47 overs

Tight lines to Steve Smith. Not much change in the scoring rate as England bowlers trying to consistently bowl in and around the off stump on the good length.

Joe Root in top five fielders in Test cricket

Root’s catch was his 182nd in Test cricket, taking him past Mark Waugh’s 181. He’s now fifth in the list top catchers in Tests.

1) Rahul Dravid - 210

2) Mahela Jayawardene - 205

3) Jacques Kallis - 200

4) Ricky Ponting - 196

5) Joe Root - 182

Australia 91/2

Anderson in for his second spell of the day. He starts off with a maiden.

Australia 91/2 in 43 overs

Mark Wood is back into the attack. The ball is moving off the pitch. OUT! Labuschagne gone, caught at first slip by Joe Root. A brilliant one handed catch by Root, diving to his left. Labuschagne gone for nine off 82 balls.

Steve Smith joins Khawaja at the crease.

Australia 91/1

Four byes! Woakes bowls down the leg and Bairstow again has to dive but can’t grab it. Five runs in that over.

Australia 86/1

Full delivery by Broad and Khawaja drives it towards covers. Three runs before the fielder stops it just the ball touches the ropes. Four runs in that over.

Australia 82/1

Woakes continues after drinks. Labuschagne continues to block deliveries. He’s yet to score a boundary. Has played 72 balls so far.

Australia 82/1 in 39 overs

A quiet first hour of play on the second day morning at The Oval. Only 21 runs have been added to the overnight score. No wicket has fallen so far though. Labuschagne and Khawaja have had a few close calls but have survived.

Australia 81/1

A huge appeal by Broad along with the slip cordon for an LBW against Labuschagne. Umpire says not out. Broad and Ben Stokes settle on the ball going down the leg after seaming in. Follows it with a delivery that seamed away, squaring Labuschagne up. Next ball, on the hips, Labuschagne tries to work it towards fine leg but there’s a leg slip in place and almost catches it. Eventful over that by Broad.

England calls for ball change

England players have been constantly asking for the umpires to check the ball and change it since last evening. Umpires still aren’t convinced yet.

Australia 79/1

Stuart Broad into the attack as well. He bowls one down the leg and Bairstow had to dive towards his right but couldn’t grab the ball. Four byes! Technically a maiden for Broad but four runs coming in that over for Australia.

Australia 75/1

Chris Woakes comes into the attack replacing Anderson. A maiden to start with for Woakes.

Australia 75/1

A rare full delivery by Wood and Labuschagne places it towards point. Not much power there and the batters take a double. Two runs in that over.

Australia 73/1

Bad balls aren’t coming for Australia. Both Wood and Anderson have consistently target that good length around off stump. Not much Khawaja and Labuschagne can do unless they take a risk.

71/1 in 30 overs

Four runs! Finally runs off the bat. Anderson, round the wicket, bowls one onto the pads and Usman Khawaja tucks it towards fine leg boundary. A full ball, Khawaja drives it towards on side for two runs. Six runs in that over.

65/1 in 29 overs

First runs of the day. Four byes! Still not from the bat though. Down the leg and a diving Bairstow is too far away from the ball.

Australia 61/1

3 maiden in a row. Anderson and Wood have bowled well this morning. A bit of seam movement has troubled both Australian batters.

Australia 61/1

Mark Wood to start from the other end. Two good overs to start with for England. A hint of movement off the pitch with good bounce. Two maidens in a row.

Australia 61/1 in 25 overs

The players are out in the middle. Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja the overnight batters. Australia took a defensive approach last evening, scoring at just 2.4 rpo. Will the batters change the approach or continue from where they left? Will find out soon.

James Anderson to begin the day for England. Khawaja at the strike. A maiden to start the day with.

Score at Stumps on day 1

England - 283/10 in 54.4 overs (Harry Brook 85, Ben Duckett 41; Mitchell Starc 4/82)

Australia 61/1 in 25 overs (Usman Khawaja 26*, David Warner 24; Chris Woakes 1/8)

Australia trails by 222 runs

London weather forecast today

It’s cloudy in London. The forecast says there is a slight chance of rain as well during the day.

Moeen Ali injured

The news coming from the London is that Moeen Ali won’t be taking the field today as well. He stretched his groin while batting yesterday and didn’t take the field in the final session when Australia came into bat.

It seems like he’s still in discomfort and won’t be able to take the field today as well. A huge blow for England this.
