It’s the end of an era for English football as Gareth Southgate has announced he will be stepping down as manager, just two days after the Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain at the Euros finals. But behind the football manager is another Southgate, Mia, who often served as quite the inspiration for her father’s stunning Championship runs.

Mia was crowned one of the country’s most eligible power players back in the heady days of 2022, when England fans everywhere were gearing up for the World Cup in Qatar. The then 23-year-old made it into Tatler’s Little Black Book not only for her enviable family connections, but her sophisticated, sustainable, and fashion-forward style.

Looking through her social media presence now – not only her personal Instagram account, but a TikTok page dedicated to showcasing her daily outfit inspirations – it’s clear that, like Mia’s father, we knew talent when we saw it. The young Southgate scion is turning her social media skills into a flourishing career after achieving an MA in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh.

Mia is a dedicated documenter of the great and the good of the country’s cultural scene. Scrolling through her artfully curated Instagram, you’ll see summer garden parties with Mia’s friends (some of whom you might see enjoying a night at Annabel’s); trips to Grosvenor Square’s newest members’ club, The Twenty Two; and beautiful garments from brands like Sea, New York – which counts Amelia Windsor and Alexa Chung among its many fans.

Of course, there are some luscious-looking trips abroad. Holidays ranging from Fuerteventura to Florence, seaside getaways at Quinta do Lago, and sunset dinners on Botswana safaris – proving it's not just Gareth Southgate who is well-travelled.

Already crowned in Tatler's Little Black Book, Mia Southgate is quite the power player when it comes to British sport's biggest it-girls, often documenting her jet-setting travel diaries

And yes, the man himself does feature on Mia Southgate's feed: Expect to see the footballing legend in heartwarming black and white photos over pub lunches with Mia’s brother Flynn; and candid behind-the-scenes shots at Swinsty Hall, their 16th-century family home in Yorkshire.

When she’s not busy leading the pack when it comes to London’s sporting glitterati, Mia is literally running marathons. Recently, she raised over £3,000 for Bowel Cancer UK, racking up an extremely impressive time, too. First to congratulate her was her mother, Alison Southgate, with whom Mia frequently poses to share an outfit update on Instagram.

With a knack for philanthropy, is it any wonder Gareth Southgate would often cite Mia as an inspiration during his illustrious career as England manager? A passionate speaker when it comes to platforming Women’s Football, Southgate credits his daughter for keeping him on his toes.

Speaking at a Royal Television Society event in 2021, Southgate told reporters how coaching Mia’s team showed him the public enthusiasm for the women’s game and also challenged him to refresh his own outlook. ‘Within the FA we are actually very diverse, gender wise, with 38% female, I think,’ she said at the time. ‘But as my daughter said to me: “Oh, that's good is it, Dad?” I had to say: “Good point.”’

Southgate concluded his speech with a reminder of Mia’s impact on his hugely-successful coaching style: ‘For me that's a great reminder. What world do I want for my daughter? What opportunities do I want for my daughter?’

No doubt Mia Southgate will be looking forward to spending more time with her father as he steps away from the monumental job of guiding England through international competition. The country has been quick to thank Southgate for his work with the team. The President of the Football Association Prince William recently wrote a heartfelt message to the 53-year-old.

‘Thank you for creating a team that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest in 2024,’ said the Prince of Wales in a personal social media message. ‘Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny.

‘And thank you for being an all-round class act. You should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved. W.’
