Match Awards from Germany's redeeming display vs. Greece

Germany vs Greece

No Bayern Munich talents starred for Germany tonight, but Julian Nagelsmann’s side collected a 2-1 win over Greece in the final tune-up before EURO 2024.

Jersey Swap: Giorgos Masouras

It is hard to give it to anyone other than Greece’s sole goalscorer tonight, but Masouras deserves it nevertheless. He put in his effort for the game, and consistently pushed for more goals. Granted, he was subbed off before the game ended, but his impact on the game before his substitution was incredible. Unfortunately, if Greece wants to produce better results, they are going to need more than just Masouras pushing for that goal.

Der Kaiser: Jonathan Tah

Having played the full 90 minutes, and playing at the same pace the whole time, Tah was just incredible for Germany today. He was the wall Manuel Neuer needed at the back, and the help Toni Kroos needed up front. At certain points during the game, the defensive line looked...concerning to say the very least, but Tah was always there to prevent any mishaps (other than the only goal they conceded, a product of horrible defense). It looks like Julian Nagelsmann is slowly starting to find out the perfect combination at the back, and we’re all for it.

Fußballgott: Pascal Groß

Yet again, Groß was almost perfect for Germany this evening. Emphasis on the almost, because they were far from perfect today, but commendable nevertheless. And that goal...what a beautiful finish. This is the kind of finish Germany needs up front, and it looks like he may be the man for the job. Although he played a mostly cautious game, and came on as a sub, his impact was immediate. Hopefully, Nagelsmann recognizes his contribution and starts him for the Euros — now only six days away. The midfield in general was very solid today, in most part due to the performances Kroos and Robert Andrich put in, but it is looking more and more worthy of a Euros game. Just not right now, maybe...

Der Bomber: Kai Havertz

This was a difficult one, as Leroy Sané looked impressive and more in-form than in previous games, but Kai Havertz put in the best performance overall. The Arsenal FC man’s efforts up front did not go unrewarded, considering he scored Germany’s first goal and had some great runs in Greece’s half. His second goal, albeit disallowed, was testament to the skill he genuinely does have. It just needs to come out more often. If he can keep up this form for longer than the friendlies, then Nagelsmann can be confident in playing him as the striker — especially after Niclas Füllkrug’s disaster class today.

Meister of the Match: Toni Kroos

34 years old and retiring, Kroos was the man of the match today. He played the full 90 minutes, completed the most passes in the game, and was decisive both for the back line and the strikers up front. We saw glimpses of prime Kroos at Real Madrid today, and we love to see it. The doubts about his age and potential fitness and form issues can be dispelled after his performance tonight. Nagelsmann definitely will not regret calling him up, and may even be inspired to call up another aging German legend that is Mats Hummels (wishful thinking, don’t worry).
