In the absence of PV Sindhu, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Hong Kong Open 2023 in Kowloon starting Tuesday.

All matches of the Hong Kong Open 2023 will be live-streamed in India.

Results at the Hong Kong Open 2023 will also count towards qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The matches will be played at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu withdrew from the BWF Super 500 tournament to focus on the upcoming Asian Games. World championship medallists HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth also pulled out.

Lakshya Sen, 12th in the world badminton rankings in men’s singles, will be the top Indian shuttler at the Hong Kong meet. He won the Canada Open Super 500 title in July and made back-to-back semi-finals at the US Open Super 300 and Japan Open Super 750.

However, Sen’s run at the BWF World Championships was ended by eventual champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand in the round of 16. In the China Open last week, Sen was eliminated in the first round.

Lakshya Sen will look to emulate his idol Prakash Padukone at the Hong Kong Open this week. Padukone won the inaugural Hong Kong Open in 1982, the only men's singles title for India in this tournament.

Saina Nehwal is the only women’s singles player from India to win the Hong Kong Open. She won it in 2010 but will not take part this year.

Kiran George, who won the Indonesia Masters 2023 Super 100 on Sunday, will begin from the qualifiers along with Mithun Manjunath.

Malvika Bansod and Aakarshi Kashyap will start from the qualifying round in women’s singles and could also make it to the main draw directly if there are late withdrawals.

In the men’s doubles, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala, ranked 37th in men’s doubles, will represent India. World No. 2 Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have given the tournament a miss.

The women’s doubles will feature India’s world No. 17 team of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, the Commonwealth Games bronze medallists.

The Hong Kong Open 2023 badminton tournament will conclude on Sunday.
