Here are some of the easter eggs from the film that pay ode not just to Kamal Haasan’s 1996 film Indian, but also many of Shankar’s works.

Senapathy’s knife from 1996’s Indian

There’s a fast-cut sequence to pay an ode to the origin of the vigilante Indian. It features the much-dreaded knife, Senapathy’s struggles with the bureaucracy, and of course, the epic scene from the climax. This is pretty much enough to jog the memory of those who first watched the film 28 years ago.

Nedumudi Venu is back to finish what he started

You need both Tom and Jerry for a cat-and-mouse game. With the return of Indian (Kamal Haasan), it is natural that Krishnaswamy is also back chasing him. He was just a police inspector back in the day, and going by the looks of it, Nedumudi Venu seems to be playing a senior cop in the film. Kamal Haasan praised Shankar for handling the role well despite the untimely death of Nedumudi Venu even before the film was complete.

Deja vu of Indian

This particular shot seems to be a Deja vu of Indian. In the first part, Senapathy hijacks a TV channel and kills a corrupt officer in a cold-blooded manner on live TV to make a point. Shankar seems to have come up with a similar set-up in the sequel. Now, Indian doesn’t have to go hijacking a media house. A smart phone would do, and that is exactly what Kamal Haasan’s starring at in this scene.

Ode to Enthiran

Indian 2 also paid an ode to Shankar’s previous films like Anniyan and Enthiran. Shankar revealed he has used RK Lakshman’s Common Man character in the film to impart some social messages. In a particular scene in the trailer, Common Man can be seen pulling a Chitti move from Enthiran, where he operates many machine guns at one go with his magnetic powers.

And of course, the dialogue “Odavum Mudiyaathu, Oliyavum Mudiyaathu!” Kamal Haasan’s lines from the Bigg Boss reality show have become a stuff of Tamil pop culture, and have been used on social media. No wonder, Shankar has chosen it for the film as well.

A dig at Rajinikanth?

Siddharth character in the film goes, “People who say system is not good, don’t move an inch to make any change in the society.” It leaves one wondering whether it is a dig at Rajinikanth, who once said, “System sari illa (The system is not good).” Hence, it would be hard to believe that the makers of Indian 2 weren’t aware of the significance of the dialogue and was just a coincidence.
