The US Reaffirms its Commitment to Supporting Indonesia's ...
Today, the Government of the United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of Indonesia, represented by the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), agreed to extend the current Bilateral Development Cooperation Framework (BDCF) until September 2026. The extension supports the mutual decision to extend USAID’s Country Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS) and other administrative necessities.
The extended agreement, which includes the commitment of an additional $150 million from USAID, raises USAID’s investment in Indonesia to $800 million since 2020. This development cooperation support covers a variety of sectors and activities, including governance and democracy, economic development, environmental sustainability, and health.
Jeff Cohen, Mission Director of USAID Indonesia, conveyed that commitment in his opening remarks at the annual steering committee meeting on development cooperation with stakeholders from relevant ministries on Monday, November 18, 2024. “USAID will continue collaborating with the Indonesian Government to achieve Indonesia’s national development plan towards a Golden Indonesia 2045,” said Mission Director Cohen.
The Governments of the United States and Indonesia have been partners in development for 75 years. This commitment to continue building on that long history of partnership is in line with the growing bilateral relations between the two countries. Under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that was announced by Presidents Biden and Widodo in November 2023, the United States and Indonesia committed to cooperate on issues of common concern, including fostering peace and security in the Indo-Pacific, tackling the climate crisis and the clean energy transition, promote sustainable development, and pursue digital transformation.
USAID’s commitment to support the Government of Indonesia’s development objectives was welcomed by Bappenas, USAID’s main Government of Indonesia counterpart. Scenaider Siahaan, Deputy for Development Funding of Bappenas, said, “Indonesia appreciates the continuation of USAID’s support and partnership. This support is very meaningful for our efforts to achieve the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045, especially during the transition period of the new government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto.”
USAID cooperates with relevant technical ministries in implementing its development activities. USAID implements its strategy in six priority provinces — Banten, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, North Sumatra, South Sulawesi, and West Kalimantan. USAID also works in Papua and the new capital city, Nusantara, as areas of special interest.
