Indonesia vs Saudi Arabia; Herve Renard Optimistic to Make New ...
November 19, 2024 | 06:31 pm
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Herve Renard, head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team, expressed confidence in the Green Falcons's ability to adapt and secure a win against Indonesia in their upcoming away match of the 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
This encounter marks the sixth match of the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asian zone. The two teams previously met in September, battling to a 1-1 draw at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. At the time, the Saudi side was still under the guidance of manager Roberto Mancini.
Renard, who replaced Mancini on October 26 with a contract extending until June 30, 2027, seeks his first win with the Green Falcons following their 0-0 draw against host Australia last Thursday.
“My players and I know each other well. We understand what we need to do to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. There will be a new history that I will create, and it starts when we face Indonesia,” he stated at a pre-match press conference held on Monday, November 18, 2024.
The French coach pointed out his team's progress since their September clash with Indonesia. He said the Green Falcons are becoming a more unified force and are prepared to face any challenge, including the strong Indonesian team. “Their counterattacks pose a threat. This will be a tough match, but we're ready to deliver an exciting performance.”
Indonesia started the qualifiers with an undefeated run in their first three games, but have since suffered two consecutive defeats – a 1-2 home loss to China and a heavy 0-4 away defeat to Japan last Friday.
Indonesia has never managed to score more than one goal against Saudi Arabia. Records from the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSF) indicates that their first encounter took place in October 1983, during the 1984 Olympic Qualifiers. The Garuda squad held the Giants to a 1-1 draw.
Statistically, Indonesia has never secured a victory against Saudi Arabia. In a total of 15 previous meetings, the Green Falcons have won 11 games, while the remaining four have ended in draws. Saudi Arabia also has a dominant goal record, having scored 39 goals, averaging 2.6 goals per match, compared to Indonesia's meager total of seven.
