Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that Cagliari deserve plenty of credit for preventing his team from winning.

The Nerazzurri coach spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, reacting to the 2-2 Serie A draw.

Inter were not able to capitalize on the stumble by city rivals AC Milan earlier today.

Like the Rossoneri, the Nerazzurri drew against a team currently battling relegation.

Inter had gone ahead twice during the match. But on both occasions, Cagliari managed to find an equalizer.

This is exactly what the Rossoblu have been doing all season long.

Under the guidance of veteran coach Claudio Ranieri, the Sardinian side have managed to stay in matches and then pop up with goals in the decisive moments.

It was a disappointment for Inter. It means that they will need a win against Milan in the derby next Monday to secure the Serie A title – a draw won’t be good enough.

Inter Coach Inzaghi: Disappointed Not To Win, But Full Credit To Cagliari

Inzaghi said that “We knew that we were coming up against an in-form team.”

“Cagliari never gave up,” the Inter coach continued. “They played an excellent match.”

“We suffered from their counterattacks. It’s unfortunate, because we wanted to take maximum points in front of our fans.”

Asked if he thinks his team were more defensively open than usual, Inzaghi replied “Absolutely. We allowed a little more than we normally do.”

“On the first goal, we had to defend better as a unit,” the Nerazzurri coach said. “And tighten up more.”

“Then the second was a random goal. And then after that, we allowed a counterttack that was very dangerous.”

“We usually do better to stop opposition counterattacks,” Inzaghi admitted.

“This evening we were up against a team who attacked the space in behind very well.”

“We knew that they would cause problems for us,” the Nerazzurri coach added.

“Full credit has to be given to Cagliari, who had an excellent match.”

And of the prospect of clinching the Serie A title in the derby against Milan, Inzaghi said that “We’d be happy about that.”

“We’ll be well-prepared for next Monday,” the coach added.

“We wanted to win this evening. But we’ll still work hard so that we can have a great derby.”

“If we succeed then, great. If not, then there will be other matches for us.”
