The countdown has begun for Apple’s next big launch event of the year. Titled ‘Glowtime,’ the event will start at 10:30 PM IST today. Viewers can watch the event streamed on apple.com or YouTube. During the event, the Cupertino giant is expected to unveil a range of new products, including the highly anticipated iPhone 16 series, Apple Watch series 10, and the new AirPods 4. However, beyond the hardware, all eyes are also on Apple Intelligence, the AI platform that Apple introduced during WWDC 2024.

During the WWDC, Apple announced that it would roll out Apple Intelligence to iPhones with the official debut of iOS 18. Given Apple’s track record of launching new generations of iPhones with the latest OS, we expect the iPhone 16 series to officially debut with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence. This new AI-powered platform by Apple will bring personalised assistance, improved Siri capabilities, and creative tools to all four expected models of the iPhone 16 series — the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. However, while Apple is planning to introduce Apple Intelligence features to the iPhone 16 series, the company might not release all its features immediately.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence was first introduced at WWDC 2024 as Apple’s new AI-powered platform, which will bring generative AI capabilities to Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and more. Apple Intelligence will bring a host of new features aimed at enhancing productivity, creativity, and daily interactions with Apple devices.

AI-Powered Writing Tools: These tools will be integrated across apps to offer proofreading, grammar and spell-checking, tone adjustments, and content summarisation. Users will be able to rewrite text in different styles, such as Friendly, Professional, or Concise, enhancing both personal and professional communication.

Enhanced Siri: Siri is also getting a major upgrade with Apple Intelligence, including a new, more natural-sounding voice, improved contextual understanding, and the ability to maintain multi-step conversations. A new glowing border will appear around the display when Siri is active, adding a visual cue that enhances the interactive experience.

Clean Up Tool in Photos: This tool will allow users to remove unwanted elements from photos seamlessly, similar to the Magic Eraser feature available on Android devices. The tool intelligently removes distractions while preserving the integrity of the main subject.

Instant Movie Memories in Photos: Using this tool, users will be able to create custom memory movies based on simple prompts, like "Family Vacation 2024." The AI automatically selects relevant photos and music, with additional options to fine-tune the presentation using the Memory Mixes feature.

AI Summaries in Messages, Mail, and Notifications: This feature will help users summarise lengthy messages or emails, providing quick overviews to help users manage communications more efficiently. Important notifications will be prioritised, aligning with Focus Modes to minimise interruptions.

Transcribing and Summarising Calls: For the first time, the Phone and Notes apps will also offer transcription capabilities using Apple Intelligence, allowing users to record calls and receive instant transcriptions and summaries, making it easier to keep track of important conversations.

Image Playground and GenMoji coming later

Apple Intelligence also includes some highly anticipated tools, such as the image generation tool—Image Playground—and GenMoji, but they are not yet ready and are expected to roll out later in 2024 or 2025.

Image Playground: This creative tool is designed to generate images based on user prompts, adding a new layer of customisation to Apple’s ecosystem. Users will be able to create visuals that complement their notes, documents, and communications by transforming rough sketches into refined images.

GenMoji: Apple says GenMoji will enhance personalisation in messaging by allowing users to create custom emojis that resemble themselves or others from their Photos library. This feature promises to add a fun and highly personalised element to everyday communications, but it will not be available at the initial launch.

Apple Intelligence not limited to iPhone 16

It is important to note that while Apple is likely to feature the iPhone 16 series with Apple Intelligence, the tech giant has also promised to bring Apple Intelligence to a select range of older Apple devices. It will also be available on devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The beta rollout of Apple Intelligence has already begun for users who opted in with iOS 18. In addition to iPhones, Apple Intelligence will be coming to other Apple devices, including:

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max iPad Air powered by M1 or M2 chips iPad Pro powered by M1, M2, or M4 chips MacBook Air powered by M1, M2, or M3 chips MacBook Pro powered by M1, M2, or M3 chips Mac Mini powered by M1 or M2 chips Mac Studio powered by M1 or M2 chips iMac powered by M1 or M3 chips Mac Pro with M2 chips
