In addition to the variety of new products launched and previewed by Toyota in Malaysia, the Japanese brand has also brought several concept vehicles for display at the ongoing 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS).
Leading the trio of battery-electric vehicle concepts is the FT-3e Concept, first shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in October 2023. The FT-3e Concept takes on the form of an SUV with a fastback rear section,
According to Toyota, the FT-3e seats five and measures 4,860 mm long, 1,955 mm wide and 1,595 mm tall with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. This is built upon the manufacturer’s archictecture for battery-electric vehicles which have also underpinned models such as the Lexus LF-ZC as well as the FT-Se EV sports car.
This is joined by the Land Cruiser SE that brings a more conventionally square-cut, two-box SUV form. Like the FT-3e, the Land Cruiser SE concept was first unveiled at Japan Mobility 2023.
Where this one departs from convention – where the Land Cruiser name is concerned – is the use of a monocoque body construction, whereas models of the famed 4×4 nameplate have historically employed body-on-frame construction. True to Land Cruiser fashion, however, it does pack a three-row seating configuration, with styling cues from its production siblings the Land Cruiser 300 and Land Cruiser 250.
Flying the hydrogen fuel-cell flag in this BEV-majority showing among the concepts is the Hilux FCEV concept, which, as its name suggests, is a Hilux double-cab pick-up truck with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain. This draws from the manufacturer’s production hydrogen fuel-cell model, the Mirai, in the adoption of fuel cell components.
This has three hydrogen tanks located beneath the passenger cab, while the fuel-cell stack is situated in the engine bay. Electricity generated is sent to a rear axle-mounted drive motor. Joining this in the FCEV display line-up is a cut-out display of the first-generation Mirai (images in gallery below).
Rounding out the set of BEV concepts from Toyota at KLIMS 2024 is the Kayoibako concept, a battery-electric commercial van concept with a configurable interior. This takes its name from the term kayoibako, which refers to configurable shipping containers sized to reduce waste and are outfitted with changeable inserts in order to be able to meet a range of needs.
The Kayoibako measures 3,990 mm long, 1,790 mm wide and 1,855 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, and has interior dimensions of 3,127 mm in length (2,141 mm on the driver’s side), 1,485 mm in width and 1,437 mm in height.
