La Liga working on moving Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid clash to the USA in December
La Liga is exploring a bold and ambitious idea that could see Barcelona face Atletico Madrid in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on matchday 18 of the La Liga season, which is scheduled to take place between the 20th and 22nd of December.
This potential event, as reported by journalist Alfredo Matilla, is still in its early stages, but both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid seem to be in favour of this initiative led by Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga.
If this plan comes to fruition, it would not only mark a historic moment for Spanish football but also provide a significant financial boost for both clubs.
The plan is in the early stageIt is important to note that La Liga has not yet officially submitted this proposal to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Despite this, Tebas is determined to see this project succeed, unlike previous attempts to host matches outside of Spain.

To make this happen, an essential meeting with the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) is still pending. This meeting is crucial, as the AFE has played a significant role in blocking similar initiatives over the past six years.
In addition to this plan, La Liga is also working on another project that would involve Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and several other foreign clubs participating in a friendly tournament in Abu Dhabi in January 2025.
This idea has already received the green light from both Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, and Atletico Madrid’s president, Enrique Cerezo.
Tebas is keen on this project as a backup plan if the Miami proposal faces insurmountable obstacles or as a complementary event to further enhance the league’s global presence.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these initiatives, there is still a long way to go before they can become a reality.
Furthermore, the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE), a key player in any decision involving matches played abroad, has yet to hold discussions with La Liga regarding these plans.
The AFE has been a formidable opponent in the past, and their approval is essential for the Miami project to move forward. Tebas, aware of these challenges, is working tirelessly to ensure that this time, his vision becomes a reality.
