HATTERS FRUSTRATED BY EVERTON

Luton’s hopes of survival are dwindling by the game. A hard-fought 1-1 draw with Everton at Kenilworth Road was not enough to move them out of the relegation zone, and now they have played a game more than the teams around them.

Everton clinched survival last weekend, which many felt increased Luton’s chances of victory, though there were never much danger of a Sean Dyche team phoning it in. They defended resolutely, heading away cross after cross, and ensured Jordan Pickford had a relatively quiet night.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin put them ahead in the first half, clipping a penalty straight down the middle after Teden Mengi was penalised for trying to bear hug Jarrad Branthwaite at a corner.

Elijah Adebayo, starting for the first time since February, equalised with a terrific goal in the 31st minute. But though Luton dominated the second half, they struggled to create any clear chances and only really threatened a winner during a pulsating injury-time onslaught.

The draw continues a desperate run of form for Luton. They have won only one of their last 15 league games, picking up only seven points in that time. It has left them needing favours from elsewhere – starting tomorrow when Nottingham Forest go to Sheffield United and Burnley host Newcastle.

End of 2nd Half

FT

FULL TIME: LUTON 1-1 EVERTON

That was the last action of the match. There are plenty of boos for the referee, which is a bit harsh. A draw was a fair result.

The free-kick is headed clear to the ege of the area, where Townsend runs onto the ball and hits a crisp low drive. Branthwaite sticks a foot to divert it round the post and then celebrates like he's scored the winning goal!

It might not have been going in, because Coleman was on the line, but it was a great piece of instinctive defending from Branthwaite.

The corner is headed up in the air, and Berry launches into an overhead kick that hits Harrison and deflects past the near post.

Doughty's next corner is headed away, but then Luton win a free-kick 35 yards from goal...

A cross from the left is helped on by the head of Berry and pushed behind by the diving Pickford. It wasn't a particularly difficult save but he decided to play safe. Kaminski is coming up for the corner...

Mengi's ill-conceived daisycutter from 30 yards is easy for Pickford.

Gomes is booked for dissent.

Woodrow whacks a first-time shot from 25 yards that is headed away by Tarkowski.

SIX MINUTES OF ADDED TIME

This is it for Luton. They surely have to win this game to have a realistic chance of survival.

87'

The last throw: Luke Berry for Tahith Chong.

Beto wriggles away from the last man Osho in the area and then goes down. Osho had a bit of his shirt, though it was all so clumsy that VAR decide not to get involved.

A cross is headed clear to Barkley, who hits the sweetest half-volley from 30 yards. Sadly for Luton it's too close to Pickford, who makes a comfortable save.

80'

Andros Townsend replaces Elijah Adebayo, who scored a superb equaliser for Luton in the first half but can't be fit enough to do the full 100 minutes.

80'

DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION FOR EVERTON

Beto and Youssef Chermiti replace the excellent Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Idrissa Gueye.

Off

D. Calvert-Lewin

Everton

Harrison's deep cross is kept in play really well by McNeil, who strains his neck muscles to head the ball back across goal. Calvert-Lewin meets it with a majestic towering header that is tipped over acrobatically by Kaminski.

Doughty's corner from the left pinballs around the area before falling to Barkley, whose stinging shot from 15 yards is well blocked, I think by Godfrey.

LUTON PRESSING FOR A WINNER

They've been the better team in the second half, with Chong terrific, but they are struggling to test Jordan Pickford. In fact he hasn't had a save to make since first half injury-time.

70'

Cauley Woodrow is on for Fred Onyedinma.

Off

F. Onyedinma

Luton Town

Harrison's snapshot from the edge of the D takes a big deflection and loops towards goal. Kaminski scampers across his line and leaps to fingertip it over the bar. That's a deceptively fine save.
