Former world No. 1 badminton player Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the second round of the Macau Open 2024 men’s singles event with a win over Israel’s Daniil Dubovenko on Wednesday.

Srikanth, currently 38th in the badminton rankings, got the better of his 102nd-ranked opponent with a scoreline of 21-14, 21-15 in the round of 32.

The 31-year-old Indian badminton player, competing in his first BWF tournament since retiring hurt at the Singapore Open in May, looked sharp from the outset.

Srikanth established a 6-1 lead at the start and then kept his advantage intact to clinch the first game.

In the second game, Srikanth surged ahead with a 6-0 lead but Dubovenko narrowed the gap to just one point at 11-10 and again at 14-13. The sixth-seeded Indian shuttler regained control and closed out the match in 47 minutes.

Kidambi Srikanth will take on Ayush Shetty In the second round of the BWF Super 300 event on Thursday. Ayush Shetty comes into the second round following a commanding 21-13, 21-5 win over compatriot Alap Mishra.

In the women’s singles, former junior world No. 1 Tasnim Mir defeated compatriot Devika Sihag 15-21, 21-18, 22-20 for a place in the second round.

B Sumeeth Reddy/N Sikki Reddy defeated Malaysia’s Loo Bing Kun/Ho Lo Ee 24-22, 10-21, 21-13 in the mixed doubles round of 32 contest.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s doubles event on Tuesday.

All Indian badminton players who took part in the Paris 2024 Olympics, including PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen are not competing at the Macau Open. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
