In January 2022, Barcelona made headlines by securing Ferran Torres from Manchester City for a substantial fee of €55 million, with an additional €10 million in performance-based add-ons.

This high-profile transfer, initially finalised in late December 2021, saw Torres signing a five-year contract that will run until 2027, with a massive €1 billion release clause.

The move was seen as a key part of Barcelona’s plans to bolster their squad after Torres had fallen out of favour at Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola.

Barcelona are yet to finalise the pay

Barcelona’s financial situation, however, has led many to wonder whether the club has managed to keep up with their payment obligations on this deal.

A recent report from finance expert Stefan Borson offers insight into the current state of Barcelona’s payment plan with Manchester City.

According to Borson, Barcelona will be completing their remaining financial commitments for the Torres transfer by paying €13 million this year, followed by another €13 million next year.

This staged payment approach will then officially close the chapter on Torres’ transfer cost.

Unconvinced at Barcelona

While Torres’ arrival at Barcelona was initially met with excitement, he has struggled to secure a consistent starting role. Since joining, he has featured in over 100 matches for Barcelona, yet he has not managed to cement himself as a regular starter.

Currently, Torres finds himself often playing second fiddle to Raphinha, who has become the preferred option in the starting lineup.

Despite these challenges, Torres remains a valuable asset for Barcelona, providing depth and tactical options in attack. His potential to adapt and make an impact in the long term still keeps him in the squad’s rotation.

Interestingly, it must be noted that Torres might exit the club even before Barcelona settle the payment. This is because the new coaching staff is not convinced of his quality and there are reports that he might be sold eventually.
