Sommer: "Man City more than just Haaland, I'm way behind Federer"
Inter Milan keeper Yann Sommer feels Man City are “more than just Erling Haaland.”
The 35-year-old spoke to Amazon Prime, via FCInterNews, ahead of this evening’s Champions League clash. He also admitted that he’s still “way behind” Roger Federer for Swiss athletes.
Inter take on Premier League juggernauts Manchester City in their Champions League opener this evening.
On paper, this is perhaps the hardest match that the Nerazzurri could be getting to start things out in Europe.
The Cityzens are Europe’s in-form team, yet again. They have won all four of their Premier League matches.
Facing City away will therefore be a hugely formidable task for Inter.
And a key reason why the reigning Premier League champions have looked so strong has been the form of their striker Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian has scored a remarkable nine goals from just four league matches.
Therefore, stopping Haaland from finding the back of the net will certainly be a tough task for Inter.
It is not as though keeping Haaland quiet is all Inter have to do, though.
Far from it. The Nerazzurri will know that the Cityzens’ have technical and physical quality – as well as a goal threat – all through their lineup.
Inter have already managed to prevent Haaland from scoring once.
The Norwegian was unable to find the back of the net in the 2023 Champions League final, a quiet match.
But on that occasion, it was midfielder Rodri who broke Inter hearts.
Inter keeper Sommer said that “Haaland is one of the top strikers in Europe.”
“I’ve faced him on several occasions,” the Swiss international noted.
“He has great quality. But there’s also a great team around him.”
Sommer commented that “We need to play a great match. I never prepare for just one player, although obviously Haaland is important to his team.”
Meanwhile, Swiss international was asked about where he puts himself next to Roger Federer as far as Swiss athletes.
The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper admitted “I’m still far away.”
“He’s our GOAT,” Sommer said of the tennis legend.
