Man City vs Manchester United LIVE: Community Shield latest score ...

10 Aug 2024

The 2024/25 campaign officially kicks off among English top-flight teams with the Community Shield at Wembley - and it’s the same two teams meeting as were on that pitch at the end of May for the FA Cup final.

Manchester United triumphed in that game, quite possibly salvaging Erik ten Hag’s job in the process, and they’ll once more face a derby encounter with a trophy as the prize, against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Silverware might be on the line but this is essentially a glorified friendly, baring little relevance to the season ahead - yet it will be an important part of both teams’ preparations regardless, as league action is just one week away. United in particular are struggling with injuries at the start of the season, while Man City haven’t had all their Euro 2024 and Copa America stars back for long, so additional practice time on the pitch is of the essence.

Follow the Community Shield below with all the build-up and match action as Man City face Man United:

English top-flight season starts with Community Shield final, with kick-off at 3pm BST

Pep Guardiola prepared to wait for right players despite Manchester City’s increasing need for ‘deputies’

13:51 , Chris Wilson

Pep Guardiola was staring at the start of a season that could span 48 weeks for Manchester City. He has often sounded the alarm about the impact of a crowded schedule for players and the Club World Cup will only add to it. He also reflected on the challenge City face to retain the Premier League title. “Everyone wants the crown that we have worn for four years,” he said. “I understand it.” Some of his rivals do more than merely want it: they seek to strengthen to secure it. Manchester Unitedhave been more active in the transfer market. “They’ve done it for many years, but it’s not news; just when City spend,” noted Guardiola. It could be seen as an observation or a dig.

And if it has been a quiet summer in the blue side of Manchester, with only Savinho arriving, Julian Alvarez’s departure to Atletico Madrid raises the question if City will be weaker this season. “I’m very pleased with the squad for the quality of human beings and the quality,” countered Guardiola. He has touted the introduction of the teenager Nico O’Reilly to the squad and the return of James McAtee from loan at Sheffield United, while admitting Sergio Gomez, another fringe figure, is a loss.

Zubimendi, Neto, Solanke and more: Premier League transfers set to be completed before start of 2024/25

13:30 , Chris Wilson

The Premier League season is now barely a week away from starting - and while some clubs have done business already in preparation for 2024/25, there are no doubt lots of transfers still ahead before the window shuts at the end of the month.

While the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United have made moves in defence, Chelsea have added squad options everywhere and champions Manchester City have brought in one attacking reinforcement, Liverpoolhave yet to do any incoming senior business at all, so expect that to change sooner or later at the very least.

Further down the table there are still moves in the works for West Ham, Tottenham, Newcastle and more, as top-flight teams look to get set for the campaign ahead.

‘Lower-class’ teams will define Manchester United’s Premier League season, says Erik ten Hag

13:20 , Chris Wilson

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United have to improve against the “lower-class” teams if they are to challenge, after proving they can beat the best.

United face Manchester City in the Community Shield having defeated the Premier League champions in the FA Cup final while Ten Hag also cited his record against Liverpool as evidence of their ability to trouble elite sides.

But United finished 31 points behind City last season as they were beaten by Brighton, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Fulham, who ended up between ninth and 17th, and drew at home to relegated Burnley.

Manchester United already facing new season injury headaches ahead of Community Shield

13:00 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United could be down to three fit senior defenders for the Community Shield as Erik ten Hag may start the season again short of players at the back.

The United manager has lost his new signing Leny Yoro for three monthsand has four injury doubts among his defence so he is considering omitting players against Manchester City as a precaution in a bid to prevent them from spending longer on the sidelines.

United were ravaged by defensive injuries last season when Ten Hag named 33 different back fours and now only Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans definitely available on Saturday – and even then the Argentina and Portugal internationals returned to training this week after the Copa America and Euro 2024 respectively.

The transfer market has changed – and football will never be the same again

When Manchester United’s new hierarchy sat together after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a minority stake, one of the first and easiest decisions was over recruitment. The late August purchase of a 30-year-old like Casemiro was cited as the type of deal they’d never do again, and the way that was discussed is known to have aggravated the Brazilian. There was much more to the stance, however, than just Casemiro’s profile or performances. United were also seeking to follow “best practice”. They were going to copy the transfer philosophies of the two leading clubs in the game right now – Manchester City and Real Madrid.

It is now very rare that either of those two, who were also the last two Champions League winners, spend significant money on players over the age of 23. Most of their recent high-profile signings for fees have been exactly along these lines, be that a 21-year-old Josko Gvardiol, a 19-year-old Jude Bellingham, a 21-year-old Erling Haaland or an 18-year-old Eduardo Camavinga. These are for reasons of tactics as well as long-term strategies. Younger players are more suited to the intense pressing that dominates the modern game and also means clubs are investing in the next best talent.

Erik ten Hag tips ‘high-class player’ Mason Mount to make impact this term

12:30 , Chris Wilson

Erik ten Hag is counting on Mason Mount making a big contribution for Manchester United this season.

Mount had a campaign to forget at Old Trafford after joining from Chelsea in July last year for a reported £55million fee.

The 25-year-old was restricted to 20 appearances in all competitions after missing four months due to a calf injury sustained in March and saw his chances of making England’s Euro 2024 squad diminish.

Pep Guardiola explains reasons behind Man City selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City will discuss signing another striker to replace Julian Alvarez.

The Argentina international, who scored 36 goals in his two seasons at City, will complete an £82m move to Atletico Madrid.

Guardiola revealed he gave his approval to the World Cup winner’s move and accepted Alvarez probably wanted more first-team football after understudying Erling Haaland.

Manchester United target trio of alternative midfielders after Manuel Ugarte deal collapses

12:10 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United have turned their attention to Youssouf Fofana, Sofyan Amrabat and Sander Berge in their search for another midfielder after Paris Saint-Germain did not drop their asking price for Manuel Ugarte.

The FA Cup winners still admire the Uruguay international but have signalled that the time when they were willing to pay a ‘United tax’ for players is over and are willing to move on to alternative targets, with Fofana, Amrabat and Berge among the other midfielders they are considering.

United also had two bids for Jarrad Branthwaite rejected, with Everton holding out for £70m for the defender, and have not returned for a third offer.

Savinho might just be a flagship signing for the multi-club ownership model - as well as for Man City

11:55 , Chris Wilson

It is a very old-fashioned route to the top, yet also a very modern one. A few years before joining the Premier League champions, Savinho was getting up at 5am to milk his grandparents’ cows on the family farm in Brazil. Manchester City was not on his mind then, he admitted. “I was really happy being on the farm,” he said, sounding like a throwback to the times when footballers had been miners and millworkers, trained in trades or primed to take over family businesses.

At 20, he has scored in the Copa America, as part of a Brazil forward line with the Champions League winners Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, played a pivotal role in helping Girona complete a top three in LaLiga with Real Madrid and Barcelona and been bought to supply the City Galacticos. “I’m really looking forward to providing assists for [Erling] Haaland and other players like [Kevin] De Bruyne,” he said.

But City’s flagship summer signing arrived at the Etihad Stadium after a transfer with a difference; or perhaps a sign of things to come.

Marcus Rashford motivated to get back to his best for Man Utd – Erik ten Hag

11:40 , Chris Wilson

Erik ten Hag says Marcus Rashford is “very ambitious and motivated” to rediscover his best form with Manchester United.

Rashford has been linked with a summer move to Paris St Germain after a dramatic slump in form last season.

The England winger scored just eight goals in 43 appearances in all competitions having notched 30 in 2022-23, but has impressed Ten Hag during United’s pre-season tour in the United States.

Manchester United reveal possible date for Leny Yoro Premier League debut

11:25 , Chris Wilson

Leny Yoro is likely to make his Manchester United debut in November after undergoing successful surgery on his foot injury.

The £52m signing, United’s biggest buy this summer, was hurt in the pre-season friendly against Arsenal.

The French centre-back will start his rehabilitation after his operation and United expect him to be fit again in about three months.

Prediction

11:10 , Chris Wilson

Both sides have enjoyed a mixed preseason, and while we may not see a full-strength line-up from either team, City’s squad depth – added to United’s injuries, lack of signings and generally lower squad quality – should see a fairly straightforward win for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City.

Predicted line-ups

11:00 , Chris Wilson

Man Utd XI: Onana; Dalot, Evans, Martinez, Amass; Casemiro, McTominay; Diallo, Fernandes, Rashford; Zirkzee.

Man City XI: Ederson; Lewis, Phillips, Gvardiol, Wilson-Esbrand; Perrone, Kovacic; Bobb, McAtee, Grealish; Haaland.

Early team news

10:50 , Chris Wilson

For City, several players haven’t played a part in their preseason tour, though some could be expected to return for the first game of the season.

Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden and Rodri all missed the friendlies, with Guardiola later confirming that they would not be returning to the club until next week.

Erling Haaland will likely start after his preseason hat-trick against Chelsea, while Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and Jack Grealish should all feature after impressing in the USA.

It is yet unknown whether players such as Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji will be called upon by the Spaniard, so we may see a surprising line-up from the Cityzens.

Early team news

10:35 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United will be without new signing Leny Yoro after the Frenchman underwent successful surgery on his foot earlier this week. He’ll be out for around three months, a little longer than Rasmus Hojlund, who will also miss the Community Shield with an injury.

Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are also doubts, as are Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been linked with a move away for most of the summer.

“It’s about a trophy, so we will put out a team that is very competitive to win this trophy,” said Ten Hag when speaking about the match.

Man United vs Man City preview

10:10 , Chris Wilson

The Cityzens are fresh off the back of a record fourth title in a row last season, though they suffered a suprise 2-1 defeat to their arch rivals in the FA Cup final in May, with a Kobbie Mainoo goal giving United the win.

Since May, United have signed the promising pair of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, though their preseason tour of the US was missing several of their key players and they duly lost to both Arsenal and Liverpool. Withsome early injuries affecting the team, it’ll be interesting to see how they get on after a few seasons with slow starts in the ten Hag era.

City, meanwhile, have been unusually quiet in the market, bar the sale of Julian Alvarez, though Pep Guardiola’s side are waiting in the wings to make their mark on the market.

The Community Shield result rarely tells fans a lot about the upcoming season, but there’s more at stake than usual in the derby and Pep Guardiola will want to lay down a marker as he looks for an unprecedented fifth title in a row in what could be his last season in charge.
