Manchester United deadline day signing Marcel Sabitzer ‘gives everything for 90 minutes’, was once compared to David Beckham and helped knock Red Devils out of Champions League

Marcel Sabitzer has joined Manchester United after the Red Devils made a last-ditch move to sign the midfielder on deadline day.

Sabitzer has joined United on loan from Bayern Munich until June as manager Erik Ten Hag looks to add extra cover to his squad after Christian Eriksen was ruled out until April.

Eriksen picked up an injury against Reading in the FA Cup last weekend and was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

The Dane has now been ruled out for several weeks, leaving United with little choice but to enter the transfer market again late on in January

Sabitzer was their main target and with Bayern happy to let their midfielder leave, the Red Devils moved quickly.

The Austrian has struggled to nail down a starting spot in Julian Nagelsmann’s side and has not started a game for the club since early November.

In total, he has featured in 54 games and only scored twice since joining the German champions from fellow Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

His time at Leipzig was where he made his name, with Bundesliga’s official website comparing his playing style to that of United legend David Beckham.

Sabitzer was described as ‘a goalscoring midfielder with killer set-piece technique’ which makes his best performances reminiscent of Beckham.

He made over 200 appearances for Die Roten Bullen, scoring 52 goals while also amassing 68 caps for Austria, earning praise from his international boss.

Former Austria boss Franco Foda said: “Marcel is a player who gives everything for 90 minutes, does a lot for the team and works a lot defensively.

“He runs a lot, has some technical moments and is scoring goals.”

During his time at Leipzig, he was part of a team that knocked Man United out of the Champions League in the 2020/21 season.

He provided an assist for Angelino who opened the scoring in a 3-2 win to send the Red Devils down into the Europa League.

After a couple of difficult seasons since joining Bayern, he will be hoping his move to the Premier League could help to reignite his form.

And Ten Hag obviously believes Sabitzer is the man to fill the gap left by Eriksen’s untimely injury blow.
