The LA Galaxy have signed center back Maya Yoshida, sources involved in the deal confirmed to The Athletic on Friday. Here’s what you need to know:

The Galaxy are under sanctions and can’t sign players from abroad during the summer transfer window, but can sign free agents from abroad after the summer transfer window ends on Aug. 2. All MLS clubs can sign free agents until the roster freeze on Sept. 13. Yoshida, who turns 35 in August, is a free agent after his contract with Schalke expired this summer. Backstory

Yoshida, a Japanese international, has made 127 caps for his country. He spent eight years with Southampton, making 194 appearances for the English club. He also featured for Sampdoria and VVV-Venlo in Europe.

The Galaxy were interested in adding a center back this summer following the injury to Martín Cáceres.
