Met Gala 2024

Taking sartorial risks was, of course, in fashion for the best-dressed stars at the Met Gala 2024.

At its core, the Met Gala is a costume ball in support of the Costume Institute, the department of The Metropolitan Museum of Art that boasts a collection of more than 33,000 objects related to the world of fashionable dress and accessories. A well-curated guest list featuring a wide range of talent (imagine actors and influencers rubbing elbows with Grammy Award winners, athletes, high-society figures, and fixtures from the realms of media, technology, and more) and a focus on fashion make the annual event a highly coveted invite. The theme of this year’s fundraiser is “the Garden of Time” (taking its name from a 1962 short story by English writer J.G. Ballard), which gave partygoers plenty of inspiration. From moody, dark florals to symbolism reflecting the fleeting nature of time, it’s clear that the “Garden of Time” was just the place to spark the imagination, resulting in myriad spectacular, inventive looks on the Met Gala 2024 red carpet.

On Monday night, while all Met Gala 2024 attendees offered their best interpretation of “the Garden of Time,” the best-dressed guests found a way to honor both the theme and their own creative vision in a single look. After all, there’s no better place than the Met Gala to showcase one’s take on personal style, from hundreds of thousands of dollars in sparkling jewelry to couture gowns made with over-the-top trains designed to cascade ever so elegantly across The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s iconic steps.

Ayo Edebiri took the evening's “Garden of Time” theme to the next level with a custom floral dress by Loewe, made with hand-embroidered, hand-painted lace and 3D appliqué blooms. In an interview with Vogue, the actor shared why she chose this particular gown for her Met Gala debut. “That was the one that spoke to me the most, but then Danielle [Goldberg, my stylist] was like, ‘This is the one that Jonathan [Anderson] is also the most excited about,’” Edebiri said. “That really locked that in for me, in my heart.”

Elle Fanning channeled a fairytale princess in a translucent look by Balmain, complete with an off-the-shoulder neckline draped across her shoulders by two “birds.” Over 70 people were involved with the creation and construction of Gigi Hadid's custom Thom Browne gown, which boasted a mind-boggling 2,800,000 micro bugle beads on the white dress alone.
