Happy Deadline Day - sort of

Getty Images

English football has long known June 30 is a date with the potential to carry huge significance. The day when tensions grew and anxieties multiplied. At the back of minds, that nagging fear of failure, with the consequences clear if things do not go to plan.

Because June 30 has increasingly become known as the new, albeit unofficial, transfer deadline.

As the date that marks the end of the financial year for the majority of Premier League clubs, it is the final cut-off point for compliance with profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Business done before we enter July tomorrow could determine which side of the threshold a club end up on and, most importantly, if a potentially disastrous points deduction will be in the post next season.

Roberto De Zerbi has been confirmed as the new head coach of Marseille on a three-year deal.

The Athletic had reported that the French side reached an informal agreement for the Italian coach to succeed Jean-Louis Gasset, who retired at the end of the last season. The 70-year-old was placed in interim charge in February after the dismissal of Gennaro Gattuso.

"I am very happy to sign with Olympique de Marseille, I felt a strong desire to join this club,” De Zerbi, who left Brighton at the end of last season, said.

"The history and prestige surrounding OM, the passion and fervour of its supporters, the seriousness and enthusiasm shown to me by Frank (McCourt, owner), Pablo (Longoria, president) and Medhi (Benatia, sporting director) were decisive in my decision to take on this exciting challenge."
