A humbling loss to start the tourney for India!

IND vs NZ, Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: New Zealand beats India by 58 runs

New Zealand began its Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a 58-run win over India at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Friday.

IND 102 all out

Mair with her fourth over. Full outside leg, clubbed to deep midwicket for a single. Shreyanka top edges her lofted shot attempt. Both backward point and short third go for it and Plimmer at point fails to hold on. WICKET!! Shreyanka again looks to go big, flies straight up and mid off completes an easy catch.

Shreyanka Patil c (sub)Molly Penfold b Mair 7(13)

Renuka in at 11. WICKET!! Flashes at a full one outside off and hands a simple catch to backward point. Four wickets for Rosemary Mair!!

Renuka Singh c Devine b Mair 0(1)

A comfortable 58-run win for New Zealand!

IND 99/8 in 18 overs

Amelia fires one down legside. Asha gets an edge on the sweep that trickles to short third for a single. Four!! Shreyanka brings out the reverse sweep. The fielder at backward point misses it completely. Five runs from the over as Shreyanka fails to connect with her sweeps.

IND 94/8 in 17 overs

Tahuhu to bowl out. Shreyanka whips one through midwicket. Just a single. Not the clean contact that she was looking for. Asha looks to loft one legside, goes on the bounce to deep square.

IND 91/8 in 16 overs

Amelia Kerr with her third. Pooja pulls one to the legside boundary for a single. Shreyanka rocks back and pulls through fine leg for another single. WICKET!! The googly brings the downfall of Vastrakar. Cleaned up through the gate.

Vastrakar b Amelia Kerr 8(7)

Asha in at 10. Full toss outside off, driven to long on for a single.

IND 88/7 in 15 overs

Tahuhu back for her third. Pooja drives one down the ground but a good effort from the mid off fielder keeps it to one. WICKET!! Tahuhu picks her third!Deepti gives a dolly to cover.

Deepti Sharma c Devine b Lea Tahuhu 13(18)

Shreyanka in at 9.

IND 86/6 in 14 overs

Carson to bowl out. Deepti inside edges her sweep onto her own body. Connects this time but will only get a single to deep square. Deepti sends Pooja back after the latter squeezes one to the legside and sets off for two. Fired down leg, Deepti sweeps it fine for a couple. Full toss, swatted to midwicket for a single. Four!! Flighted outside off, driven through the gap in the cover region for a boundary by Pooja.

IND 77/6 in 13 overs

Mair with her third over. Full on the stumps, clipped to the legside for a single by Deepti. WICKET!! Slightly wide, Arundhati gets a leading edge that goes straight to cover.

Arundhati Reddy c Bates b Mair 1(4)

Pooja Vastrakar in at 8. Gets off the mark with a single first ball. Three from the over.

IND 74/5 in 12 overs

Amelia Kerr with her second. Arundhati the new batter in. Gets an inside edge that trickles past the stumps. Reddy gets off strike with a pull to mid wicket. Just four runs from the over.

IND 70/5 in 11 overs

Tahuhu returns for her second over. Richa looks to step down, Tahuhu fires it short and wide. Reload. Full and straight to Deepti, guided to short third for a single. Richa punches a short of a length ball through cover for a couple. Full on the stumps, clipped to the legside for two more. WICKET!! Could this be the final nail in the coffin. Richa’s attempted legside flick takes a leading edge and an easy catch for Devine!

Richa Ghosh c Devine b Lea Tahuhu 12(19)

IND 63/4 in 10 overs

Carson for her third over. Dropped! Deepti survives. She charges down the track and tries to slog the full toss over the mid on fielder, who couldn’t get hold off the ball. Eight runs came in that over.

IND 55/4 in 9 overs

Lea Tahuhu into the attack. Jemimah almost chips the ball straight back to the bowler off the first ball. OUT! Jemimah is gone. Full ball, Jemimah tries to go over mid on fielder but doesn’t get enough power and is caught. She’s out for 13 off 11 balls.

Deepti Sharma is the new batter in.

IND 52/3 in 8 overs

Amelia Kerr is into the attack. Lots of running and less boundaries for Indians at the moment. Tricky phase for the team. Still a long way to go in the chase. Seven runs came in that over.

IND 45/3 in 7 overs

Kerr continues. New Zealand bowlers are getting the ball to swing into the right handers. That has restricted Indian batters’ scoring area. The batters are trying to come down the track to tackle the swing. Jemimah and Richa dealing in singles at the moment.

IND 43/3 in 6 overs

Mair for her second. FOUR! Classy shot by Harmanpreet. Width on offer. She waits for the ball, opens the face of the bat and pushes the ball towards square for four. Follows it up with a double towards square leg. Huge appeal for LBW against Harmanpreet and umpire gives it! The Indian captain has reviewed it though. Umpire’s call and Harmanpreet has to go!! Big wicket. She falls for 15 off 14 balls.

Richa Ghosh is the new batter in. Appeal for LBW against her off the very first ball. Umpire has given it not out and New Zealand has reviewed it. Wickets missing, Ghosh survives. Takes a single off the last ball.

IND 34/2 in 5 overs

Carson for her second. Harmanpreet gets going finally! Brings out the slog sweep behind square leg and gets the boundary. Another slog sweep, this time towards deep midwicket, but only for a single. OUT! Smriti is gone. Tries to loft the ball over long off but is caught in the deep. She’s gone after scoring 12 off 13 balls.

Jemimah Rodrigues is off the mark with a sweep towards square leg that goes for four.

IND 21/1 in 4 overs

Kerr is back. Two singles to start the over. Reminder, this could be India’s highest chase in Women’s T20 World Cups. Excellent bowling by Kerr. Bringing the ball into the right hander, not allowing Harmanpreet any room whatsoever.

IND 19/1 in 3 overs

Rosemary Mair into the attack. Smriti drives the ball towards mid off. There’s a bit of a hesitation and Harmanpreet could’ve been run out there. After five dot balls, Mandhana finally manages to pierce the gap and in what fashion! Full ball, almost a yorker, outside off and Mandhana opens the face of the bat and guides the ball between keeper and short third for four.

IND 15/1 in 2 overs

Eden Carson into the attack. OUT! Shafali falls off the first ball of the over. Wanted to flick the ball towards leg side, gets a leading edge back to the bowler. Shafali goes for two off four balls. An early wicket.

Harmanpreet Kaur in at three. Attempts a reverse sweep off the first ball, top edge over the keeper and she’s off the mark with a single. Short ball and Harman pushes the ball towards deep midwicket and gets a double.

IND 11/0 in 1 over

Half-tracker from Kerr and Smriti pulls the ball towards square leg for four to begin the chase! Both teams begin their innings with a four off first ball. Smriti takes a single off the next ball. Down the leg wide to Shafali. Down the leg, beats Shafali and keeper and the batters run a double. Umpire calls it a bye. It was too close to the batter. Another pull by Mandhana but there’s a fielder in the deep and will keep it to a single.

Run chase

Shafali Varma and Smriti Mandhan - the usual suspects for India to begin the chase. Jess Kerr with the opening over.

Fifty for Sophie Devine!!

Shreyanka to bowl the last over of the innings. Full toss on the stumps, no timing and it falls well ahead of Jemimah at long on. Devine moves to 48. Green pulls one to deep-mid to rotate strike. Four!! Full and wide, driven past mid off to the boundary for four and that brings up her fifty!! Low full toss, clubbed to deep mid wicket for another couple. Comes down the ground and clubs one to long on. Green was on her bike early and manages to sneak in a second. Top edge to short third brings a single. NZ finishes on 160/4 in its 20 overs

NZ 149/4 in 19 overs

Renuka to bowl out. Devine steps down again but Renuka fires it wide, just manages to make her ground in time. A double for Devine down the ground, takes her to 44. Slow full toss, pulled to midwicket for another couple. WICKET!! Halliday makes room to go inside out over cover, only manages to hand an easy catch to Smriti at extra cover.

Halliday c Mandhana b Renuka Singh 16(12)

Maddy Green in at 6. Four!! Full toss on the stumps, Green paddles it behind for a boundary. Easy pickings.

NZ 139/3 in 18 overs

Deepti with her fourth. Halliday guides a full, wide one through third man for a couple. Four!! Brings out the reverse sweep this team and beats short third to find the fence. Four!! Sweep shot through square leg and that finds the fence too. Four!! Devine steps down and pulls through midwicket to get the third boundary of the over. Mistimes one down the ground and picks up a single to close out an expensive over.

NZ 123/3 in 17 overs

Arundhati with her last over. Devine pulls ferociously through midwicket. Jemimah does excellently well to keep it to a single. Halliday pulls one through wide long on, just a single. Six runs from the over.

NZ 117/3 in 16 overs

Shreyanka back. Halliday attempts a sweep but gets nowhere close to the ball. Shreyanka appeals for lbw but nothing from the umpire. Devine charges down again, mistimes it to long on for a single. Four!! Pulled away through the legside and Devine continues to find the boundary with ease. Slightly fuller, Devine gets a top edge on her sweep but the ball lands safely. Halliday misses her sweep again, doesn’t get connection again. India reviews for lbw this time. Too high and India loses a review.

NZ 109/3 in 15 overs

Renuka back into the attack. WICKET!! Overpitched outside off, Kerr slams it straight to cover.

Amelia Kerr c Vastrakar b Renuka Singh 13(22)

Brooke Halliday in at 5. Four!! Pummelled straight down the ground by Devine for four. Four!! Width, carved over the infield through covers for another boundary.

NZ 98/2 in 14 overs

Deepti with her third over. Kerr rocks back and pulls to deep mid for a single. Kerr goes down the ground, falls well ahead of Harmanpreet at long off. Five singles from the over. Some confusion in the middle. Lengthy discussion between Harman and the umpires. The fourth umpire sent Kerr back when she was walking back to the dugout.

Replays suggest that Kerr was run out while attempting a second run. The umpire returned the bowlers cap at the non-strikers end before the run out. Thus the point of contention is regarding whether the ball was dead before the run out was effected.

NZ 93/2 in 13 overs

Asha to bowl out her quota of overs. Four!! Devine comes down the track again, punches it hard past the bowler for a boundary. Four!! Asha goes short, Devine rocks back and pulls through the gap in the legside for another boundary. Single to long on makes it 9 from 3. Three singles to finish off the over.

NZ 81/2 in 12 overs

Shreyanka Patil into the attack. Full, spinning into Kerr, swatted away to deep cover for a single. Devine looks to go big down the ground, ball falls well short of long on. Appeals for run out. A misunderstanding between the two batters in the middle as they attempted a second run. But, the throw came in at the wrong end. Devine just manages to get in. Another pull to long on for a single of a slightly shorter delivery. 6 from the over.

NZ 75/2 in 11 overs

Asha continues. NZ in the middle of a lull after both openers were dismissed in a trice. A run rate of 4.25 in the last three overs.

Asha goes short, Kerr pulls to long on for a single. Tossed up to Devine, defended right back to the bowler. Devine steps down and drives on through the covers for a single. Just the three singles off the over.

NZ 72/2 in 10 overs

Reddy for her third over. Three singles in five balls. Reddy has bowled splendidly today so far. A terrific turnaround for India after that PowerPlay. Just four runs in that over.

NZ 68/2 in 9 overs

Asha again. OUT! Plimmer comes down the track and is caught at long on. Two in two for India! Plimmer goes for 34 off 23 balls. Suddenly New Zealand has lost both its openers.

Sophie Devine in at four. Asha keeping it tight, and Devine plays three dots before swiping the ball towards long on for a single. Only a single in that over plus a wicket.

NZ 67/1 in 8 overs

Reddy. Bates scoops and gets a double. There’s a change in intensity of Indian fielders now, in a positive way. OUT! Bates is gone. She goes for the slog towards midwicket and is caught in the deep. She falls for 27 off 24 balls.

Amelia Kerr is here. Two dot balls to begin with.

NZ 61/0 in 7 overs

Terrific batting and poor fielding sum up the PowerPlay.

Asha Sobhana into the attack. Both Bates and Plimmer aren’t shying away from using their feet and coming down the track. Plimmer hits slog sweep and a good fielding in the deep saves two runs. Plenty of running around.

NZ 55/0 in 6 overs

Arundhati Reddy into the attack. Low full toss and Bates hits it toward square leg for a single. FOUR! That’s poor fielding. Plimmer hits the ball towards square leg, should’ve been just a single, but Renuka fails to collect the ball and it runs towards the boundary. DROPPED! Richa Ghosh drops Bates. She went for a slop and the ball went high in the air. Richa misjudges and the ball bounces off her gloves. Now Plimmer guides the ball towards fine leg and gets a boundary. Nothing going India’s way.

NZ 43/0 in 5 overs

Deepti continues. Bates comes down the track and chips the ball towards short midwicket. Shafali the fielder dives but can’t reach, Bates gets a single. Plimmer guides the ball towards fine leg and the batters run three! Now Bates hits a slog sweep but India has a deep midwicket fielder in place, just a single.

NZ 35/0 in 4 overs

Renuka continues. Boundaries continue to come. This time mistake by Richa Ghosh as the New Zealand gets four-byes. Plimmer wanted to scoop and shuffled across and the ball beats both batter and the keeper. Richa Ghosh is standing up to the stumps. India appeals for a stumping though not much excitement from Indians. Plimmer is inside, not out. Plimmer comes down the track again and lofts the ball towards midwicket but only for a single.

NZ 29/0 in 3 overs

So we have change in bowling. Deepti Sharma into the attack. Starts off with a wide down the leg. It was way too close to be called a wide though. Harmanpreet Kaur is having a discussion with the umpire. Plimmer comes down the track and smacks the ball straight past mid on for four. Now Plimmer hits towards sweeper cover and gets two more. Follows it up with a single, pushed towards square leg. Plimmer comes down the track and lofts the ball over JUST over the long on fielder. Umpires are checking whether it is a four or a six. It’s a SIX.

NZ 13/0 in 2 overs

Renuka Singh from the other end. Bates takes a single off the first ball. Not much movement so far, slight inswing for Renuka and Plimmer gives the strike back to Bates. A touch fuller by Renuka, Bates makes slight room and drives the ball towards cover and runs a double. Beats! Shaping up for an inswinger but holds it line and beats Bates’ outside edge. A good over.

NZ 9/0 in 1 over

Pooja Vastrakar to bowl the first over. Short ball and Bates pulls the first ball towards square leg for four. Slightly fuller, and Bates just pushes the ball towards mid on for a dot. Third ball, Bates walks down the wicket and pushes the full ball past mid on for four. Vastrakar pulls her length back slightly and Bates cuts towards deep third for a single. Straight., full and Plimmer defends. Pulls her length back, Plimmer charges down the track but can only push the ball back to Vastrakar.

All set

National anthems are underway.

We are done with the anthems and players are now getting set to play.

New Zealand openers - Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer - are out in the middle. Indian fielders are spread across the field.

Pitch report

Has cooled down slightly, breeze flowing across the ground might mean dew might not come in. Firm, plenty of live grass. Should be moderate pace and bounce. Spin could come later but if there’s dew, that probably won’t happen as well, reckon Nasser Hussain and WV Raman.
