The Ernakulam district office of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has sought permission from its headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram to initiate legal proceedings against the illegal discharge of untreated wastewater from an apartment complex at Kaniyampuzha near Eroor here.
The move is part of follow-up measures being initiated after the Thripunitura municipal authorities on Thursday seized two electrical motor pumps used in violation of norms at Shwas Mystic Heights apartment complex to discharge untreated sewage into a nearby open land and drain.
A joint inspection carried out by the civic authorities and the PCB had found that the common sewage treatment plant was not functioning as per norms. The motor pumps were used to collect water from the collection tank and the untreated wastewater was found being discharged into the open in violation of the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act.
The district office-1 of the board has sought permission to initiate legal proceedings against the apartment owners’ association and the builder before the Ernakulam Judicial First Class Magistrate court. It is also awaiting nod for serving closure intention notice on violators under the Water Act for not complying with rules pertaining to treatment of wastewater.
