No Joy for Ben Brereton Díaz as He Breaks Unwanted Premier ...
Southampton continued their poor start to the Premier League season with a fourth defeat at home to Manchester United. If that wasn’t bad enough, one of their players, Ben Brereton Díaz, has now broken the Premier League record for the most games played in the competition without a single win.
The Premier League hasn’t brought much joy for Ben Brereton Díaz. After making his Premier League debut last season for Sheffield United, he didn’t end on the winning side in any of his 14 appearances for the club, losing 10 and drawing four of those games in 2023-24. It hasn’t been much better at Southampton, either.
Their winless start to 2024-25 means that Brereton Díaz has stretched his winless run to 18 matches in the Premier League and has overtaken the all-time worst record set by Marvin Sordell between 2012 and 2015 for Burnley and Bolton Wanderers (17 games – L14 D4).
The latest of those games came as Southampton lost 3-0 at home to Manchester United at St Mary’s Stadium in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.
While he now holds the record for the most games played in the Premier League without winning, the Chile international still has some way to go to equal the Premier League record for the longest winless run.
That record is currently held by Oliver Burke, who didn’t end on the winning side in any of his first 25 Premier League appearances before he finally enjoyed victory in his 26th appearance in the competition when Sheffield United defeated Newcastle United 1-0 in January 2021 – nearly four years after his debut.
Burke broke a record previously held by Gareth Bale, who didn’t win any of his first 24 Premier League games. His opening 24 matches as a Tottenham Hotspur player in the competition saw the club lose 15 times and draw another nine, with his misery finally ending in September 2009 after Harry Redknapp kindly brought him on with Spurs 4-0 up against Burnley with five minutes remaining.
