Luis Enrique bullish over PSG’s chances today

Luis Enrique hasn’t left himself much wiggle room if his Paris Saint-Germain side fail to get the job done against Borussia Dortmund. Enrique insisted on Monday that he has total faith PSG will win and progress to the Champions League final at Wembley.

“That is the only sentence I know in French, ‘on va gagner’: we are going to win,” he said.

“It is a sentence I like, and I always think my team will win, so that is what I say.”

Dortmund 4-2 Atletico Madrid (Brandt, Maatsen, Fullkrug, Sabitzer)

In keeping with the rest of the Champions League quarter-finals, the second leg at Westfalenstadion was an absolute belter.

Julian Brandt and Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen struck with five minutes of each other in the first half to give Atletico the aggregate lead before a Mats Hummels own goal pegged them back.

The tie was flipped on its head again when Angel Correa slammed a volley in off the crossbar after pinball in the Dortmund penalty area.

But it was the Germans who would prevail after a superb glancing header from Niclas Fullkrug, and Marcel Sabitzer's brilliant left-footed finish.

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Dortmund (Haller)

A tough assignment faced Edin Terzic's men as Champions League knockout specialists Atletico Madrid were drawn against them.

And it proved to be a very tough one for Dortmund as they had to take their medicine in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

First-half goals for Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino threatened to put the tie beyond doubt, but the visitors ensured they would leave with something to cling onto as Sebastian Haller made it 2-1 in the 81st minute.

It was all to play for in the second leg.

Dortmund 2-0 PSV (Sancho, Reus)

And that straight shootout could not have started better for Dortmund.

Within three minutes of kick-off, Jadon Sancho struck a perfectly directed right-footed effort low and inside the near post to give Dortmund a 1-0 lead on the night and a 2-1 lead on aggregate.

The Germans survived a few scares after that strong start and made sure of their quarter-final place thanks to an ice-cold finish from Marco Reus in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

PSV 1-1 Dortmund (Malen)

Top spot in Group F earned Dortmund a relatively comfortable last-16 opponent.

But PSV proved a stern test in the first leg of the first knockout round. Donyell Malen's first-half goal in Eindhoven set Dortmund on the right track but they were pegged back in the second half by Luuk de Jong's converted penalty.

It meant the second leg in Dortmund would be a straight shootout for a place in the quarter-final.

Dortmund also found themselves in the 'Group of Death' and were being written off before a ball had even been kicked in this season's Champions League.

Expected to be the team dropping into the Europa League, Dortmund defied expectations and topped Group F. It started badly as they were beaten 2-0 away to PSG but a five-game unbeaten run followed which included three consecutive wins.

A 1-1 draw against PSG at home in the final group game ensured they would progress to the knockouts as group winners.

PSG's hopes of a second-leg turnaround were dealt a blow early on in Barcelona as Raphinha's goal gave the French side a mountain to climb after just 12 minutes.

But they got the shot of life they needed just before the half hour mark when Ronald Araujo was sent off for tripping Bradley Barcola who had broken through on goal.

Dembele scored again to haunt his former club before Vitinha brought parity for his side with 10 minutes of the second half starting.

From there, there would only be one winner and a terribly timed challenge from Joao Cancelo gave Mbappe the chance to give PSG an aggregate lead from the penalty spot.

He made no mistake and made absolutely sure of the win in the dying minutes to send his side into the semi-final.

PSG 2-3 Barcelona (Dembele, Vitinha)

Victory against Real Sociedad over two legs brought another Spanish match up for PSG.

Another Champions League meeting with Barcelona was the outcome of the quarter-final draw and the first leg at home offered the chance for them to take a lead into the second leg. But they were went into half time behind after Raphinha netted against the run of play for the Spaniards.

Proactive changes from Luis Enrique had the desired effect in the second half as quick-fire goals from Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha flipped the first leg on its head.

But the twists and turns were not done there as Raphinha scored again to make it 2-2 before substitute Andreas Christensen headed Barca into a first-leg lead. Not the first leg PSG would have wanted in front of their own fans.

Real Sociedad 1-2 PSG (Mbappe [x2])

The Mbappe roadshow rolled into San Sebastian for the second leg as he was, once again, the star in the second leg of PSG's Round of 16 clash.

It took him less than 15 minutes to break the deadlock and give his side an almost unassailable lead with a brilliant finish into the bottom corner. The Frenchman then put the tie truly beyond doubt just before the hour mark with an equally clinical finish, this time inside the near post.

With the tie reaching its conclusion, Real Sociedad got themselves on the scoreboard thanks to Mikel Merino's 89th-minute volley.

Job done for PSG.

PSG 2-0 Real Sociedad (Mbappe, Barcola)

A runners-up finish could have led to a really tricky Round of 16 tie, but PSG were relatively fortunate as Real Sociedad, one of the tournament's more inexperienced teams, were their opponents.

As the runners up, it was a home tie first for Luis Enrique's side and they took advantage of playing in front of their own supporters.

Mbappe opened the scoring, as he often does, after a goalless first half before 21-year-old Bradley Barcola made it 2-0 with a deft finish.

And that is how the game finished, with PSG taking a two-goal lead to San Sebastian for the second leg.

Now, let's take a look at how these two teams made it into the final four.

PSG had the misfortune of being drawn in Group E, which many considered the Group of Death. Dortmund, Milan and Newcastle were their opponents.

PSG were far from their best with defeats at St James' Park and the San Siro standing out, but they did enough to make it into the knockouts as runners up.
