"Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who is linked to the club until June 30, 2025," an official statement began, noting that the Croat arrived at the Bernabeu in 2012 and "in his twelve seasons defending out shirt", has become "a legend of Real Madrid and world football".
The club highlighted the 38-year-old's impressive 26-title haul, which includes six Champions Leagues, five Club World Cups, four European Super Cups, four La Ligas, two Copa del Reys, and five Spanish Super Cups.
In the Spanish capital, Modric also became one of five players to have won six European Cups alongside Nacho, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos, and Paco Gento. Furthermore, he now has the most titles in Madrid history.
Individual accolades were also underlined, with Modric winning the 2018 Ballon d'Or, UEFA iShares MSCI EAFE ETF Player of the Year and The Best FIFA Men's Player awards in the club's colours.
He has also been named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI six times and dubbed the UCL's Best Midfielder twice.
As Croatia's all-time appearances leader on 178 caps, Modric has run out for Madrid on 534 occasions and will look to boost that club account in the upcoming 2024/2025 season.
Modric's renewal comes amid his former midfield partner Toni Kroos deciding to retire following the European Championship with Germany, who were knocked out by eventual winners Spain in the quarterfinals as Croatia lost to La Roja in the group and failed to advance to the next phase.
Given his age, Modric can't expect to be a protagonist in Carlo Ancelotti's talent-packed squad, but he will probably be rotated when starters such as Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are in need of a rest.
Modric's experience and knowledge are priceless, however, meaning he is also likely to act as a sort of mentor who transmits the club's values and winning mentality to the next generation coming through.
This month, Modric and Madrid will head off to the United States for a preseason friendly tour which also takes in an installment of El Clasico against bitter rivals FC Barcelona.
