'He is paying off' - De Rossi praised after Roma win

27 Feb 2024

Daniele De Rossi guided Roma to their fifth win in six games in their Monday evening clash with Torino, impressing the Italian newspapers.

The 2006 World Cup winner took over in the Italian capital last month following the sacking of Jose Mourinho, giving him his first real chance in the dugout after a brief spell at SPAL. His appointment looked to be a cheap short-term option until the summer.

De Rossi has shined in charge of Roma so far, only suffering defeat to league leaders Inter, and his impressive work continued as the Giallorossi edged out a 3-2 win over Torino on Monday evening. The result puts them sixth in the table, just four points behind fourth place Bologna.

Corriere dello Sport underlined the former midfielder’s clever preparations for the match and touching scenes with hattrick scorer Paulo Dybala, writing: “He confuses Juric (despite the spy story) by playing with the 3-5-2. Difficult first half, then that Dybala phenomenon changes the match, and he embraces him like a son.”

Gazzetta dello Sport were a little less impressed with De Rossi’s work, suggesting Dybala bailed him and Roma out of trouble, commenting: “Everything changes and is mirrored. It seems like a risky choice, because Roma suffer in building up from the back. But then Dybala gives them a hand.”

Tuttosport were more forgiving of De Rossi and Roma’s work in their win over Torino, commenting: “With him on the bench, Roma are moving forward toward Europe and have won five in the league, lost one. His arrival is paying off.”

De Rossi ratings in Italian newspapers
