Shine Muscat Grapes in the Spotlight, Beware the Impact of Eating ...
October 30, 2024 | 10:56 am
CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta - The Shine Muscat grapes imported from have been in the spotlight for the past two days. Reportedly, these green fruits are banned in Thailand due to containing pesticide residues.
Head of the Ministry of Health's Public Communication and Information Bureau, Aji Muhawarman, stated that each type of pesticide has different health risks for humans, depending on the chemical compounds in the pesticide, the intake amount, which is the residue present in the food, and the duration of exposure.
Aji revealed several health impacts due to long-term exposure and sufficient doses of pesticides, such as health disorders, including endocrine disorders and liver and kidney function disorders, caused by pesticides with systemic effects.
"Pesticides with systemic effects are absorbed by plants and circulate through plant tissues, so their residues can persist in the fruit or other parts of the plant, even after washing," he said in a press release on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
Non-systemic pesticides, he said, are pesticides that work on the plant's surface, so their residues tend to stick outside and are easier to remove through washing. With a long duration and dose, he said, they can cause neurological and hormonal disturbances.
He also reminded the public to pay attention to several things when processing vegetables and fruits, such as thoroughly washing fruits with running water or soaking them in specific solutions, such as salt or vinegar solution, to reduce pesticide residues.
"Choose organic fruits that do not use pesticides, select fruits that can be peeled for consumption," Aji said.
In addition, the public is advised to check the labels to see the country of origin and information on food safety certification that can provide explanations about the quality of pesticide management carried out by the fruit-producing company.
Previously, the Ministry of Health will coordinate with the Indonesian Quarantine Agency and the Ministry of Agriculture in responding to the issue of pesticide contamination on Shine Muscat grapes in Thailand and Malaysia.
