Thailand Finds Dangerous Chemicals in Chinese Shine Muscat ...
October 29, 2024 | 02:17 pm
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand has discovered that Shine Muscat grapes imported from China contain high levels of harmful chemicals, including banned substances. The Thailand Pesticide Warning Network (Thai-Pan) and Consumer Foundation revealed the findings of recent laboratory tests conducted on 24 grape samples from various sources.
Of the 24 samples, 23 were found to contain excessive amounts of harmful chemicals. One sample tested positive for chlorpyrifos, a pesticide banned in Thailand, while others were contaminated with a combination of 14 different chemical residues, some of which are not even listed as harmful in Thailand. Therefore, its safety impact has not been measured.
Prokchon U-sap from Thai-Pan warned that these systemic pesticides, which are absorbed into the grapes, cannot be easily removed by washing. She urged importers and traders to prioritize consumer safety by conducting regular tests on imported fruits and removing any contaminated products from shelves.
If possible, she suggests that the import of Shine Muscat grapes containing many harmful chemicals should be banned.
Chinese Shine Muscat grapes are popular among Thai consumers due to their lower prices compared to those imported from Japan or South Korea.
In response to the report by Thai-Pan, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA) has confirmed that Shine Muscat grapes, imported from China, are safe to eat, as long as they are thoroughly washed in plain water or water containing baking soda or salt.
