Smile 2—a sequel to the 2022 hit horror thriller Smile—is new in theaters. Do the end credits of the movie tell us anything about where the franchise goes from here?

The original Smile tracks a curse that is passed on to Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) after the psychiatrist horrifyingly witnesses a patient taking her own life. Unbeknownst to Rose, the patient in her death passed on to her a malevolent invisible force that only seems to manifest as visions of people flashing maniacal smiles at her.

The logline for Smile 2 reads, “About to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her past.”

Aladdin star Jasmine actor Naomi Scott plays Skye in Smile 2, while Strange Darling star Kyle Gallner reprises his role as Joel—a detective and ex-boyfriend of Rose who discovers a pattern of cases similar to Rose’s patient in the first Smile film.

Written and directed by Smile filmmaker Parker Finn, Smile 2 opens Friday in theaters nationwide.

What Happens During The End Credits Of ‘Smile 2’?

Generally, an end credits scene serves one of two functions. First, a scene during the credits or after the credits may tie up loose ends from a scene earlier in the film.

In addition, an end credits or post-credits scene may set up a potential sequel to the film.

However, the R-rated Smile 2 does not have a scene during the end credits or post-credits. Instead, like 2022’s Smile, the end credits are accompanied by haunting unintelligible voices and sounds throughout.

However, just because Smile 2 doesn’t have an end credits or a post-credits scene doesn’t mean that the franchise is finished. In fact, the final scene—which for spoiler purposes won’t be revealed here—leaves the door wide open for Smile 3. Given the final two shots of the film, a third Smile movie promises to be on a much larger scale than the first two Smile films.

Of course, Smile 2 needs to be a hit at the box office in order for its studio Paramount Pictures to justify bankrolling another sequel, and by early indications it appears that Smile 2 will get off to a healthy start.

Deadline projects Smile 2 will earn $20 million-plus in theaters in its opening weekend against a $28 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.

The Hollywood trade publication reported that the first Smile opened with $22 million in domestic ticket sales in 2022 against a $17 million production budget before P&A. As such, the sequel seems to be on the same box office trajectory as the original, although with a bigger—but not outrageous—budget.

According to The Numbers, the first Smile earned $105.9 million domestically and $111.1 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $217 million. If Smile 2 grosses anywhere near those numbers, don’t be surprised if Smile 3 gets the go-ahead.

Also starring Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula, Ray Nicholson, Lukas Gage and Peter Jacobson, Smile 2 opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
