Liverpool bring the curtain down on their Premier League campaign with a trip to Southampton this afternoon.

The Reds head to the South Coast knowing that no matter what happens at St Mary's, they will not move from the position of fifth in the Premier League table. Liverpool have already booked their place in next season’s Europa League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have taken 22 points out of a possible 24 over their last eight matches, but speaking on Friday afternoon, the Reds boss revealed he plans to make changes to his starting line-up for the game.

The Saints, on the other hand, are already relegated after a relatively miserable campaign. The game will also be Ruben Selles’ last in charge of the club. He is reportedly set to be replaced by Russell Martin.

Darwin Nunez is in contention for Liverpool's season finale, with Klopp set to give an opportunity to a number of fringe players. Nunez has been absent for the last two games with a minor toe complaint but returned to training this week at Kirkby.

Andy Robertson, though, has had a scan on a groin problem, while Ibrahima Konate has been suffering from illness, and Naby Keita is also set to miss the game.

Kicking off at 4.30pm, Paul Gorst and Ian Doyle will both be at St Mary's to bring you live updates on the action, as well as bringing you team news, analysis and reaction.

Jurgen Klopp and FSG are about to get busy and three Liverpool transfers prove it

The last time Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp didn’t mess about.

Sadio Mane was brought in from Southampton, Gini Wijnaldum taken from relegated Newcastle United. And Joel Matip was already on his way on a free transfer from Schalke.

All three would go on to play an integral role in first taking the Reds back into Europe’s elite competition before conquering the continent, the world and, after 30 years of waiting, finally England.

Player ratings from St Mary's

Caoimhin Kelleher 5

Will feel he should have done better with the second and fourth Southampton goals. Not his best afternoon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Whipped in some decent crosses first half and initiated second goal but kept busy defensively. Tremendous assist for the third.

Joe Gomez 5

Understandably rather rusty after so long since a start and somewhat slack in closing down for Southampton’s third.

The season ends in a draw. An eight-goal thriller on the south coast

Seven added

Into the final seven minutes of added time at St Mary's.

18:17Stephen Killen

Almost five

McCarthy with a fine save to deny Salah

18:10Paul Gorst

End to end stuff

This game has been great. Defensively, Liverpool have been awful at times but it doesn’t mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. Both teams are properly going for the winner

18:07Stephen Killen

What a goal it would've been

Salah hits the post with a remarkable first-time volley from a long ball.

18:03Paul Gorst

What a turnaround

It’s 4-4. This is quite the game! Gakpo made it 4-3 and then Jota smashed in his second of the game almost immediately after. Some turnaround. Can Liverpool now grab a fifth?

18:00KEY EVENT

GOAL! Southampton 4-4 Liverpool (Jota)

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR SETS. It's 4-4.

Diogo Jota has two.

17:59KEY EVENT

GOAL! Southampton 4-3 Liverpool (Gakpo)

Maybe there's still life left in this. Cody Gakpo.

17:58Stephen Killen

Into the final 20 minutes

Liverpool's season has just 20 minutes left.

17:53Paul Gorst

All of Liverpool's doing

4-2 Southampton. This game might just have escaped the Reds now. Armstrong has buried one past Kelleher after a dreadful pass from Henderson to concede possession

17:52KEY EVENT

GOAL! Southampton 4-2 Liverpool (Armstrong)

It gets worse for the Reds.

17:50Stephen Killen

BOOKED: Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott now in the book.

17:45Paul Gorst

Liverpool ring the changes

Subs aplenty for Liverpool: Henderson, Diaz, Gakpo and Elliott all on. Jones, Firmino, Tsimikas and Fabinho go off.

ON: Elliott, Diaz, Henderson and Gakpo.

OFF: Tsimikas, Jones, Fabinho and Firmino

17:44Paul Gorst

Not the best showing from Salah

Not Mo Salah’s finest hour here, I have to say. Looks like a player ready for a rest, even if he is giving it his all. A lot of mistakes creeping into his game.

17:41Stephen Killen

Quadruple sub for the Reds

Elliott, Henderson, Gakpo and Diaz all about to emerge

17:40Ian Doyle

The little importance is starting to show for Liverpool

Not much riding on this game and it is starting to show for Liverpool. When intensity is your identity, the lack of it being required doesn’t half show.

17:37Paul Gorst

Yet another poor goal from a Liverpool perspective

Not a great start to the second half for Liverpool as Kamaldeen Sulemana makes it 3-2 to Southampton. Another poor goal to concede from a defensive point of view as the Saints forward escapes the attention of Fabinho before carrying it to the edge of the box and curling one home.

17:36KEY EVENT

GOAL! Southampton 3-2 Liverpool (Sulemana)

Worst possible start to the second half.

17:20Ian Doyle

Drab despite four goals

It was all a bit too easy for a much-changed Liverpool in the opening stages.

But that they a) have nothing to play for and b) are playing with a scratch defence was very much evident as Southampton worked their way back into the game.

It was nice to see Firmino get his goal. Not much else worth from this game, though.

Mind you, if Liverpool decide to increase the intensity in the second half they could easily score a few more goals.

Ultimately it depends on how much they can be bothered.

HT player ratings

Caoimhin Kelleher 5

Will feel he should have done better with the second Southampton goal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Whipped in some decent crosses and initiated second goal but kept busy defensively first half.

Joe Gomez 6

Bit rusty after so long since a start but no real errors before break.

Joel Matip 6

Asked to do a bit more than usual when covering for Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

Kostas Tsimikas 5

Struggled to get to pace of game and could have done more to prevent Southampton first. Booked.

Fabinho 7

Enjoyed himself when pushing forward and claimed assist for second goal.

James Milner 7

Skipper on his final appearance, involved in plenty before the interval.

Curtis Jones 7

Saw a lot of the ball and keen to keep Liverpool on the front foot.

Mohamed Salah 6

Didn’t get much change out of Lyanco first half but kept at it.

Roberto Firmino 7

Showed great patience with finish for Liverpool’s second and lively. Lost ball to spark Southampton equaliser, though.

Diogo Jota 6

Just about tucked away the gift for the opener and always a threat going forward.

17:17Stephen Killen

HT: Southampton 2-2 Liverpool

Liverpool traced into a two-goal lead through Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

However the already-relegated side fought-back thanks to James Ward-Prowse and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

17:16Paul Gorst

Liverpool have started to go off the boil

Liverpool have started to go off the boil in the last few minutes. Southampton are definitely having the better of it since they levelled. Half-time is approaching. Two minutes added on.

17:15Stephen Killen

Two minutes added time

Two additional minutes at the end of the first-half.

17:13Stephen Killen

Into the final minutes of the first-half

Two minutes of normal time remaining at St Mary's.

2-2.

17:06Ian Doyle

Milner fires wide

Milner drags a shot wide from a long way out. Couldn't resist having a dig there

17:00Paul Gorst

A soft goal to concede

That’s such a soft goal for Liverpool to concede. Firmino hesitates and loses it near the halfway line and then the defence are undone far too easily. Kamaldeen tucks it beyond Kelleher. 2-2. Quite the advert for meaningless last-day football, this.
