Sporting Lisbon have issued a statement confirming Manchester United’s interest in triggering Ruben Amorim’s €10 million release clause.
On Monday, United confirmed the sacking of Erik ten Hag after two-and-a-half years in the Old Trafford dugout. The Dutchman was sacked after a string of poor results and performances, with the loss to West Ham the final nail in the coffin.
Soon after, it emerged that Amorim is the club’s number one target to replace Ten Hag. It was stated that the Red Devils were working on a deal, with journalist Ben Jacobs revealing that a verbal agreement had been struck.
A subsequent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United’s sporting director Dan Ashworth was keen to get a deal for Amorim over the line very quickly, possibly before Sunday’s home clash vs. Chelsea.
Sporting have now released a statement confirming that United have notified them of their intention to pay Amorim’s €10 million release clause, meaning that it’s only a matter of time until he is officially appointed as United boss.
The statement reads, “Manchester United has expressed an interest in hiring coach Rúben Amorim.”
“With the Board of Directors of Sporting SAD referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the Company and the coach.”
“Specifically the respective termination clause and the amount of Euro 10,000,000.00; Manchester United has expressed an interest in paying Sporting SAD the amount of the aforementioned clause.”
