India’s top badminton players, including PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, will be in action at the Thailand Open 2023 badminton tournament, scheduled from May 30 to June 4 in Bangkok.

The Thailand Open is the 11th tournament on the 2023 BWF World Tour and the third Super 500 event of the season after the Indonesia Masters and Malaysia Masters. All the matches will be live streamed in India.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, currently 13th in the women’s singles BWF World rankings, will open her campaign against Michelle Li of Canada. The former World Champion might face Rio 2016 Olympic champion Carolin Marin in the quarter-finals.

PV Sindhu reached the final of the Thailand Open in 2018, where she lost to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the title showdown.

The 27-year-old PV Sindhu recently reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters 2023, where she was knocked out by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia. PV Sindhu also lost to the Indonesian in the final of the Madrid Spain Masters 2023 last month.

Meanwhile, former world No. 1 Saina Nehwal will make a return to the court after an injury layoff. She was last seen in action at the Orleans Masters 2023 in April.

Among the other Indians in the women’s singles category, Malvika Bansod will start in the qualifiers against Gao Fang Jie of the People’s Republic of China. Tanya Hemanth, Ashmita Chaliha and Aakarshi Kashyap will also start in the qualifiers.

In the men’s singles event, former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth will open against China’s Weng Hong Yang, who lost to India’s HS Prannoy in the final of the Malaysia Masters 2023 on Sunday.

HS Prannoy, who won his maiden BWF World Tour title in Kuala Lumpur, will miss the tournament in the Thai capital.

Commonwealth Games 2022 champion Lakshya Sen, currently ranked 22nd in the world, will take on Chinese Taipie’s world No. 26 Wang Tzu Wei in the opener. Priyanshu Rajawat, who won Orlean’s Masters 2023, will also start in the main draw.

India’s men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also return to action after skipping the Malaysia Masters. Ranked fifth in the world, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will start in the main draw against France’s Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar.

The Indian doubles pair had won the Swiss Open 2023 crown back in March.
